Joe Biden held a private conversation with community members in Lancaster, PA, who have benefited from the Affordable Care Act, on June 25, 2020. Due to COVID-19, Biden did not hold an open event but did stream the speech portion to his Facebook.
Biden focused mainly on his plan to make health care affordable and accessible to everyone: a hot topic after Donald Trump originally announced rollbacks to the Affordable Care Act and rolled out or attempted to roll out so-called "Trump Care."
His campaign stated the purpose of this event was to:
"Highlight the need to protect and build on the ACA as the Trump administration files a brief with the Supreme Court in favor of invalidating the landmark law in its entirety. In the middle of a pandemic, Trump is trying to take away health insurance coverage from 23 million Americans as well as critical protections for people with pre-existing conditions."
The question that remained in my head, though: "Why Lancaster?"
Why did Biden come to a county where Trump received nearly 60 percent of the vote in 2016 and is historically a very Republican part of the state? In fact, a publication in York County, which sits directly next to Lancaster published an article asking this very question after Biden's speech, and the answer is much simpler than you'd think.
Parts of the county are starting to "turn blue." Within Lancaster County, there is also Lancaster City, which historically votes for Democrats.
For the first time in my lifetime, since I became politically aware, I have actually seen yard signs in my part of Lancaster for Joe Biden, for a Democratic candidate, and if I'm being honest: I didn't believe it at first.
Two of the Joe Biden signs are within walking distance from my house, and I actually went on a walk to see them because I had to see it to believe it considering I often see multiple Donald Trump signs in one yard alone.
See, I think Biden and his campaign team were tapping into something bigger, something that is being revealed to me as well by seeing Biden signs pop up in yards around my house.
Not everyone in the "Trump Territory" is necessarily happy with the job he has done as President of the United States over the last four years.
While I still don't believe Lancaster will swing for Joe, I do believe there is potential that Pennsylvania will. After all, in 2016, Trump received 48.8 percent of the votes, and Hillary Clinton received 47.6 percent of the votes. That's not a huge margin, and I'm definitely seeing more support for Biden locally than I did for Hillary in 2016.
While I know you can't trust the polls entirely because we saw how that worked out in 2016, Biden does hold a lead of 10 – 12 percentage points on Trump in Pennsylvania in the latest polls.
If Biden and his team make some lead way in areas, like Lancaster, that are having some blue spots pop up and some blue votes pop up in the otherwise red territory, there's a strong possibility he could win Pennsylvania's very crucial electoral votes in November.
