Jiu Jitsu: More Than A Martial Art

Life is hard but In the words of Rocky Balboa "it ain't about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward." For me, martial arts helps when I'm dealing with any form of crappy situations. It's my therapy and it's my paradise. Depending on what you are looking to get out of martial arts, there various different options and disciplines that you can train according to your needs. People tend to deal with anger in one of two ways. One option is they release all there anger and rage onto something as form of stress releaf. The second option is learning how to Channel that anger and let it go. Even though I made one option sound better than the other, there really isn't anything wrong with either of them so long as you have a safe and productive outlet. If you choose option number one, Boxing is most likely the best thing for you. It is much better to punch a punching bag than punching a random pedestrian in the middle of the street. Now let's say you are looking for something beyond stress relief. You are looking for something that will help you control your anger and stress and channel it. Well that leads me to option number 2, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Jiu Jitsu is great because you learn far more than just martial art techniques. The very nature of Jiu jitsu down to it's core is all about charecter building. Let's say you have an important essay for school due the next day. You need to get it done quickly but if you freak out you won't do well on it whereas if you go into it with a calm and clear mind, you will be able to get it done without any issue, but how does that apply to Jiu jitsu? Its really quite simple. If your back is on the ground and someone has mounted you, you can't just freak out because you will open yourself up to more attacks. Instead you need to clear your mind and think logically about how escape and get to a dominant position. These are two different scenarios, but the logic is still the same. Life will pressure you from all angles and it's up to you whether that pressure turns you into a diamond or dust. Jiu Jitsu will test your patience, temper and mindset and you will come out stronger because of it. Jiu Jitsu is more than a martial art, it's a life lesson. It will teach you about how to react better in bad situations. It will teach about patience and it will teach about perseverance just like it did me. You don't just sharpen you skills on the mat, you sharpen your thoughts as well. Jiu Jitsu is very humbling in the sense that it will make you hyper aware of all your bad habits and it slowly causes a change in you to better yourself and stray away from those habits. Jiu Jitsu will teach more about life than you could ever imagine, you just have to be willing listen and learn. OSS

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
