After almost 11 years of leaving audiences awestruck with their consistently incredible performances, the producers of "Jersey Boys" have announced that the musical is saying "Bye, Bye, Baby" to the Broadway stage early next year.
Since it opened on November 6, 2005, audience members from all over have flocked to the August Wilson Theatre to see the hit musical, which features some of The Four Seasons' greatest hits. Having won the ever-coveted Tony Award for Best Musical in 2006, "Jersey Boys" is nowthe twelfth longest-running Broadway show in history with 4,490 performances as of September 4, 2016. However, last week, the show's producers announced that the show will end its Broadway run on January 15, 2017.
Set in New Jersey during the 1960s, "Jersey Boys," written by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, with music by Bob Gaudio and lyrics by Bob Crewe, tells the story of how the original Four Seasons came together and how they eventually fell apart. Frankie Valli, Tommy DeVito, Bob Gaudio, and Nick Massi each take turns narrating part of the story, divided by seasons of the year, in which they not only tell the audience about the story of the band, but also about the personal issues that each member is going through. Although they came together for the music, the group is eventually torn apart by overwhelming debt and strained relationships. However, the group left quite a legacy behind, creating some of the most iconic music of that era.
So what is the best part about Jersey Boys? The music, of course! The creators of this musical took most of The Four Seasons' greatest hits and made them shine on the Broadway stage. While you sit comfortably in your seat, "Jersey Boys" transports you back to the 1960s with the sweet sounds of "Sherry," "Walk Like a Man," "Big Girls Don't Cry," "December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night)," "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" (my personal favorite), "Who Loves You" and many more! I have had the honor to see "Jersey Boys" three times, and the music never gets old; if you have seen it, then you know what I mean when I say the songs are embedded in your brain for days after seeing it!
Although it is sad to see this iconic musical leave Broadway, it has certainly had quite the run. Arguably the best jukebox musical of all time, "Jersey Boys" will seriously be missed after it closes in January. The "Jersey Boys" experience is unlike any other; simply, it is one-of-a-kind.
If you haven't seen it yet, it's not too late to get tickets! Just make sure you get them soon so you can see what all the hype has been about!
