JazzFest 2016: The Recap
Live & Listen

As I sit on the bus back to Mobile, I can't help but to think of JazzFest as being one of my best adventures. First of all, It took me and my friend, Tyler, three attempts to even get to the city of New Orleans that Saturday. Second, It was my first ever music festival.

As we entered the fairgrounds on Sunday afternoon, the atmosphere was amazing. The First place we went to was the Gospel tent, a whole tent dedicated to Gospel music. Immediately from there we went straight to the Acura Stage where we would be for the remainder of the festival. The first band we watched was The New Orleans Suspects. I had never heard them before but the sound they produced was absolutely amazing. They played really good funk music that screamed New Orleans.

The Second band we saw at the Acura stage was Better Than Ezra. I'm not going to lie, before the festival, I hated big time on Better Than Ezra. I'm the first to admit that I was wrong. Their performance was awesome and they knew how to work the crowd. Maybe they knew how to work the crowd because they are from New Orleans, maybe it's because they had fun with it, or maybe it was because they brought out kids from an elementary school they adopted to help them at one point. Whatever it is, it was awesome and I really regret hating on them. In fact, I really enjoyed their music and have found myself listening to some of their stuff post-JazzFest.

The third band we saw at the Acura stage was The Voices of The Wetland All-Stars. This was a super band consisting of members from different bands from the local area. The purpose of their band is to bring awareness to issues of the Gulf Coast. Their performance was really cool. They played funk songs like "Ain't no funk like Louisiana funk." I thought that it was awesome that they came together to play for a cause as a super band.

The fourth and final show of the day was, of course, the headliner, the band we were willing to stand on our feet for an entire day to see, The Red Hot Chili Peppers. The Chili Peppers was the best performance I have seen in my life. They played some of their hits including "Dani California," "Scar Tissue," "Snow (Hey Oh)," "Californication," "Aeroplane," "By The Way" and many more. But absolutely nothing was better than the closing Jam they did with The Meters. They ended the jam and the show with "Give It Away." The biggest complaint of the crowd was that first of the show ended about 15 minutes early and that they didn't play "Apache Rose Peacock," the song written for and typically played at New Orleans shows.

JazzFest was an awesome experience and I hope to attend another music festival in New Orleans sometime within my lifetime. The atmosphere was awesome, the weather was awesome, and the music was awesome. It was all amazing.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
