Jazz & Classical Music Are The Reasons We Have Our Favorite Songs

Jazz and classical music, unfortunately, do not get the same recognition as other genres of music.

This year's Grammy Awards show was pretty great. I have to admit that there were many amazing musical performances this year. Donald Glover's soulful performance of his song "Terrified" definitely gave me chills; and I almost started crying when Kesha performed her song, "Praying".

Among all of these amazing performances, and awards being distributed, there were two things that I wish the Grammys would have given more recognition to, which were jazz and classical music. Jazz and classical music are two music genres that seem to be the most underrated. It's not just the Grammys that, in my opinion, do not honor these two categories of music the same way other categories are honored, but its other award shows as well, such as the American Music Awards.

It is unfortunate to see that jazz and classical music are somewhat being given the backseat at music awards ceremonies. Why is it that awards for jazz are given out before the actual awards show begin? Artists who perform these two genres of music should be given the same amount of respect. They should be able to give performances and receive awards during the actual airing of the awards ceremony. Jazzmeia Horn's fantastic performance of Boby Timmons' song, "Moanin", was so delightful to see.

Before the premiere of the Grammys on Sunday, January 28th, I was hoping to see more than one or two jazz performances. I was hoping to also hear some classical music as well. I was disappointed, once again, that jazz and classical musicians weren't given the same limelight other musicians were given.

We have to remember that jazz and classical music are just as important and worth hearing about as other genres of music like pop, and hip-hop is. These two genres of music are where other genres of music came from. Hip-hop gets its roots from jazz, in the same way, classical music has influenced and affected rock music.

In my opinion, these two categories of music should be put on a pedestal. I believe that jazz and classical musicians deserve more recognition then what they are being given now. Whenever I ask someone why jazz and classical music are not treated the same way as other genres at music awards ceremonies and events, they usually say that it's not what the mass majority is interested in. As upsetting as it is for me to constantly hear this, there is still a large population of people, not just in the U.S., but in the entire world who are lovers of jazz and classical music. Jazz and classical music are not dead music genres.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.
