That's right, it happened.
Japan is getting more real estate.
For everyone not familiar with the story, a new island was formed just south of the island Nishinoshima, where the main Volcano lies. This new island started out as a small islet which then grew to encompass the small island of Nishinoshima.
Both of the above images are of the island: first appearing(left) and starting to combine with the preexisting island(right).
This is interesting because it makes you wonder how much farther this new combined island will grow. Will it become as big as some of the main Japanese islands, such as Honshu, Hakkaido or Okinawa? I guess only time will tell, but this also raises more questions that we have to ask ourselves.
Will this island be habitable one day?
If the answer is yes, then who will live on it? What function will it play in its new community? All of these questions will be answered with time, but for now we can only speculate.
However, I personally hope that this island will grow and become a contender for the future. Japan could sure use the extra space and this island may be a blessing for them, but this island could mean a variety of other things across the spectrum.
For instance, what kinds of creatures, big or small, land or air, will come to live on this island and call it their home? What kind of ecosystem will develop on this island? And most importantly, should we use this island to develop our own ecosystem. An ecosystem that we created for the sole purpose of seeing how different animals and insects evolve and adapt to a new environment?
All of these questions will be answered in time and should be answer by the people with which the island belongs to.
