Former FBI Director James Comey came forward and delivered his testimony to members of Congress. This was necessary, so that Congress and the American people could see the truth of what really happened between President Trump and James Comey. James Comey first came under intense scrutiny after refusing to properly investigate Hillary Clinton and her improper use of a personal email server.
Now the tables turn and James Comey was investigating Russia's interference in the 2016 election and former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn's connections with Russian delegates. Comey publicly came out said he believed he was fired so that the FBI would no longer investigate the so called "collusion." Comey alleges that President Trump defamed him and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
"Those were lies, plain and simple, and I am so sorry the FBI workforce had to hear them, and the American people were told them," Comey said of Trump's changing statements about his firing.
The Trump administration originally claimed James Comey was fired because of his botched handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation. President Trump later said Comey was fired because he was "grandstanding" and was a "showboat."
President Trump and the possibility of obstructing justice was a subject matter that committee members asked but Comey said he could not answer them because the special counsel would investigate the possibility of obstruction of justice by the White House.
Senators and media pundits have compared the Comey incident to Nixon's Watergate troubles. Senator Mark Warner claims President Trump violated guidelines established after Watergate to prevent any possibility of political interference by the White House into FBI investigations. The president then called Comey on two separate occasions (March 30 and April 11) and asked him to end the investigation into Michael Flynn and the Russia investigation.
Comey's meeting with Trump on January 6, is the day the White House found out that Comey was not investigating President Trump personally.
"Prior to the January 6 meeting, I discussed with the FBI’s leadership team whether I should be prepared to assure President-Elect Trump that we were not investigating him personally. That was true; we did not have an open counter-intelligence case on him," Comey said in his statement. "We agreed I should do so if circumstances warranted. During our one-on-one meeting at Trump Tower, based on President Elect Trump’s reaction to the briefing and without him directly asking the question, I offered that assurance."
Comey's investigation has become a huge spectacle, drawing dozens of people to the hearing and causing bars to turn their televisions to the hearing. Many spectators were lining up at the door long before they opened. This hearing is important because we as Americans and voters, need to see that our President is conducting political business legally and fairly. Trump is allowed to disagree with Comey but can not just request Comey end an investigation into something that makes the President look bad.
