17-year-old makeup artist and social media sensation, James Charles, has been named the first ever, male Covergirl.
Makeup and makeup trends have become more and more popular in today’s society, especially on social media platforms. There’s not a day where I scroll on my Facebook or Twitter, and some kind of eye makeup tutorial or lipstick swatch pops-up.
Makeup itself has been accepted as a form of self-expression, rather than a DIY Photoshop for the female population and now that a male model has become the new face of one of the most influential brands, it truly shows a new wave of acceptance and praise for self-expression.
Even though there is a ton of stigma behind male makeup artists and males who wear makeup, I believe this is the first step in creating a new society filled with people who are unapologetically themselves.
If you think back in history, so many voices have been silenced when it came to self-love and acceptance. Most of us grew up in a society where you had to conform to societal norms to be considered “acceptable” or “beautiful” and now this young man is the face of a household name brand. It’s only a matter of time until everyone’s quirks and personalities are accepted in society.
It’s comforting to know that the next generation will be more loving and accepting of people, but also I love the fact that will be more publicized and better received in everyday life.
Covergirl made a bold move that should be extremely praised and I think they made a great choice of spokesperson.
Charles is almost everywhere on social media, which makes him extremely popular and influential already, so naming him the male Covergirl makes sure that this message will be sent out to many people.
Also, have you seen this boys makeup skills?
It's impressive and his eyebrows are iconic.
Charles most definitely deserves this title and he is already influencing the world in ways that will only improve society as a whole. It is my dream (and I think a lot of other's) that one day this world will accept everything about someone. Whether it's race, gender, or makeup, we all have a natural right of expression, self-love and acceptance.
