I see a lot of people on this site who are absolutely in love with the hit show "The Office." Don't get me wrong-it's a great sitcom, but I hardly see anybody ever talking about "Brooklyn Nine-Nine."
If you haven't seen this amazingly funny show, you're missing out because it's funnier than "The Office" (I know, how dare I say that!), and it's a show unlike any other that you'll find on modern day television. One of the best parts of "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" is the lead character, Jake Peralta, and in an effort to get everyone to watch it. so we don't have another cancellation scare on our hands, here are 7 reasons to show that Jake Peralta is 10 times better than Jim Halpert.
1. He's played by Andy Samberg.
GiphyHonestly, do you need anything more than that? Not only is he the coolest person in New York City, but he's a previous actor and writer from "Saturday Night Live," and he brightens up the show with his weirdness. Jim Halpert was funny in a dry and sarcastic way, whereas Samberg's character is outlandish, cocky, and he does and says things that you would have never thought to see on television.
2. He's inherently feminist, and it's proven in every show.
It's a completely normalized character trait, too! No one ever gives him a high-five or slap on the back for being that way (which is how it should be!). He respects his female co-workers as equals, and it's such a great thing to see because you don't see that a lot in today's media content.
3. He's friends with all of his co-workers.
GiphyCorrect me if I'm wrong, but it seems like a lot of the comedy surrounding "The Office" is based off how much the co-workers hate each other. This especially goes for Jim because at times it definitely seems like the only person who he can stand even being around in that setting is Pam.
In "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," Jake is friends with all of his co-workers, and they all act as one unit and like a big family. They are are all incredibly supportive of one another, and believe it or not, it's actually funnier that way. If Jake hated everyone the way that Jim does, the show wouldn't be as great as it is.
4. His relationship with Amy doesn't affect his work life.
GiphySo "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" and "The Office" are both similar because Jake and Jim met their significant other at work, but the difference between the two is that Jake and Amy aren't always up in each other's business while they're working. They keep their romantic life and their work life separate, so their relationship never gets in the way of workplace morale.
5. Also, Jake doesn't go after Amy when he learns that she's in a relationship with Teddy.
GiphyAdmittedly, he was always flirty with her when she was single, and he did tell her that he liked her "romantic stylez" before he left and went undercover for the FBI for 6 months. However, when he comes back he recants his confession after learning that she's still in the relationship. He respects it and he doesn't try to get in the way of it, which is so unlike what Jim did in "The Office."
Is what Jim did romantic? If you consider him being turned down by Pam, then continuing to follow her out of the office, and then kiss her even though she says no because she's in a relationship then I guess it is (please note the sarcasm). This happens way too often on television, and it gets really old really fast so I love the way Jake handles his feelings because it's respectful and realistic.
6. Jake loves his job as a cop and he's content with his life.
GiphyJim absolutely hated his job, and it's actually really depressing to watch at times. Jake loves working at the NYPD, and even though he admits that it can be tough at times, audiences know that he wouldn't want to be anywhere else.
7. He's just more fun to watch as a character.
GiphyIf I had to choose between these two shows, I would never watch another episode of "The Office" ever again. Samberg and the rest of the cast make "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" the amazing and hilarious show that it's known to be. It's just so much more fun to watch, so make sure to catch "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" for season 6 on NBC in 2019!
