A few weeks ago, Jake Fromm was getting the most scrutiny of his career, probably even his life. After a disappointing, embarrassing loss to LSU in which Fromm had the worst game of his career, people inside and outside Bulldog nation began to ask if Fromm was the man to run this offense. Many fans and analysts were calling for freshman sensation Justin Fields to get the nod, but head coach Kirby Smart stayed with the veteran and he played as such.
Fromm played the whole game against top 10 ranked Florida and found success on third down, a statistic he was lacking all year long, in which he scored three touchdowns on that down alone. The following week, he continued his run with three touchdowns over his next two games against big opponents, securing his starting job. However, people still believe he is not the guy who should be in the QB1 spot. If the Dawgs want to complete their revenge tour and beat an indestructible Alabama team, Fromm must be the starter.
Since taking over Jacob Eason's job last season, Fromm has been one of the most accurate passers in college football. He doesn't have the glamor of a Justin Fields, a dual-threat QB with a cannon of an arm, but where Fromm lacks in running the ball, he finds most of his success by making smart plays and running the offense to pure perfection. Offensive coordinator Jim Chaney has praised Fromm in the past for his football IQ and is one of the best he has ever coached. That's a huge compliment considering Chaney coached future hall of famer Drew Bress at Purdue. Fromm can read the defense so well and make the correct adjustments at the line of scrimmage, a key to beating Alabama. Alabama has not faced a QB that can make correct check downs better than Fromm can, which is a huge reason why he should continue to start.
In last years national championship game, Fromm played solid for a freshman facing off with against the number one defense in college football. He made elusive plays, keeping plays alive, and scoring a touchdown. He left a lot of room for improvement and will have a chip on his shoulder when the Dawgs meet the Tide on December 1st. That will play as a key advantage against another superior Tide defense.
There should be no debate on this anymore, especially the way Fromm has performed over the last few weeks. I still believe Fields should find some playing time in the SEC title game and can be a very valuable weapon, but Fromm deserves to start the rest of the year. With the success the offense has endured since the loss to LSU, Georgia can't possibly consider making a QB switch so late in the season. Hopefully Fromm continues his success against rival Georgia Tech this weekend and carries that into one of the biggest games of his college career.
