9 Things You Know To Be True When You Have Older Parents

I've got older parents, so what?

9 Things You Know To Be True When You Have Older Parents

My parents are my best friends.

They are continually supportive of everything I do in life, and they tell me they love me every single day. And my friends realize their awesomeness too! My mom regularly teaches Jazzercise and is extremely fit. She's got a golden personality. She has the ability to start a conversation with absolutely anyone: ranging from a stranger on the ski lift to the shyest person we know. My dad is pretty cool too. He's a graphic designer who collects guitars and listens to strange music. He also has the ability to start a conversation with anyone.

What you would neverguess is the fact that my parents are as old as my friends' grandparents!

Here are 9 things you only know if you've got older parents!

1. Your mom is the only one having a hot flash at your elementary school plays

Let's be honest. In middle school especially, my hormones were just starting to kick in while hers were winding down. We both basically cried for a year straight. God bless my dad and my brother for putting up with us.

2. The shopping lecture

Anytime you go shopping, you get a lecture on how dad only had two pairs of pants for the entire school week. You also hear a lot about how gas was 20 cents a gallon and a cheeseburger was 10 cents.

3. You see Toto, Yes, and Carlos Santana in concert while your friends are seeing Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber

Old music is life.

4. Your mom names the dog after legendary guitarist, David Gilmour from Pink Floyd

No, Gilmour doesn't come from Gilmore Girls or Happy Gilmore.

5. 80's day during Spirit Week is a cinch

The pictures say it all:

6. The weird family relations

I have nieces and nephews who are only a few years younger than me, and older than my brother. Yet we are still their aunt and uncle. My cousins are at the ages where they could be aunts and uncles. My dad was a grandpa when my little brother was born. (The farthest left boy is my brother, the two girls are my nieces, and the boy on the right is my nephew).

7. When your dad debates retiring so it looks better on FAFSA

After all, college is important.

8. The senior discounts

My parents could officially get senior discounts at the movies before I could see an R rated movie.

9. When you meet a family friend of your boyfriend's, and she's older and went to high school with your dad

My dad basically went to high school with everyone.

I know that my parents are older, but they're also awesome. The fact that they're older than the average parent doesn't bother me at all. After all, I keep them young.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
