The power is out. Like out-out. No lights. No heat. No internet.
One minute, my family and I are all hanging in the kitchen with ALL the electricity working, and mid-sentence everything shut off. We were in the dark as to why. (Also, literally in the dark).
My mom was in the middle of making a dessert while reading a recipe from a laptop. (So obviously, our taste buds were most upset about the hold up).
Dad? He was watching TV. I’m sure it was a boring show, but still, that was cut off real quick.
My brother was searching “Where to buy flies” on Google when he quickly realized that the internet ALSO goes out when the lights do. (Side note: he has taken up fishing, and I feel like that is necessary information when wondering why he wants to buy flies).
Me? Well, I was talking, talking, talking, per usual, and guess what? The power outage didn’t stop me.
It’s honestly embarrassing to admit that we flipped the light switch every time we stumbled into a new room. Or the number of times we thought of something funny... but needed the internet to share it. Oh wait, this is my personal favorite. When mom talks to you while shining the flashlight directly in your eyes throughout the entire conversation. I know we are a tight-knit family, but are we seriously about to throw it back to Little House on the Prairie tonight?
10 Things Running Through A Mind Without Power:
1. At what point do we have to empty the fridge? Like, how long until this milk turns to cheese
2. Should we at least start eating the ice cream?
3. Is it getting chilly in here?
4. Can you see? I literally cannot see.
5. Flashlight? Lantern? Candle? Glow stick? You name it, we got it.
6. Do the neighbors have power? “Will, run up the street and look in people’s windows so we know it’s not just us” - Dad
7. I’m going to plug this in, you know, just in case
8. Do we need anything from the store? I volunteer, as tribute, to go get whatever the heck we need from the store. Anything.
9. Why can’t my room be this dark when I’m trying to sleep in?
10. What did they used to do? I assure you they didn’t just wait around for the power to come back on. “They” were still waiting for it. (cue: Benjamin Franklin)
You know when you are just falling asleep? In that second that your eyes are closed and you just stopped thinking, but it takes one more minute to get into a deeper sleep? At that exact moment, the power came back on!!! Well, the dark was fun while it lasted, but man oh man, am I thankful for the internet, lights, and an oven to finish desserts in. Sometimes it’s fun to pretend you’re camping in the living room, but then I remember I don’t like camping.
Also, special thanks to the electric company for sending us a text that told us the power came back on — we had no idea.
