I've Caught The Doane Plague

11 things I've learned the past week, after trying become a functioning human again.

I've caught the Doane plague, also known as, "the plague". Every school has one. You know, the sickness that spreads throughout the campus. It comes around during the fall and winter, one person getting it. That one person spreads it to another then another, and before you know it, half of the school is sneezing and your class of six is down to three (for real, though, this happened to me today).

After a week of being sick, and countless phone calls with my Mom telling me what to do, I've learned a few things.

1. Drink some water. Seriously, liquids are your friends right now. Orange juice or any other juice works as well if you don't like water. I don't care what you drink (unless it's alcohol because that's not going to make you feel any better) just keep hydrated.

2. SLEEP. Your bed is your "bae" now, not your boyfriend or girlfriend. You stay in that thing unless you are doing homework, eating or showering. It's your best friend. It's warm, it's comfy, and sleep is so nice.

3. Eat some soup. Soup is nice because it keeps you hydrated, and warm. It also has all the necessary nutrients and food pyramid sections to keep you kind of functioning like a human.

4. Do your homework. Just because you're sick, does not mean that you get to slack off on your studying. Grab that anatomy book, get all settled into your bed, and start reading.

5. Watch Netflix and try to relax. This is literally every college students dream.

6. Take a shower. I love showers, ask any of my roommates. I shower daily, if not two times a day. Showers get you clean, make you feel nice and they're warm. The heat and moisture, when your sick, will also help unclog that stuffed up nose of yours. It will also help unclog those pores and make you sweat out some of the bad stuff.

7. Wash your hands. Y'all I cannot tell you how many times I have been in the bathroom and have seen people walk out of it without washing their hands. Hygiene is so important, friends!!

8. Seriously, wash them. Seriously, germs are how you got here in the first place.

9. Follow your doctor's orders. Doctors are professionals in their area. If they tell you to take some medicine, you take that medication. If you follow their rules, you'll gain the best results faster, also know as, YOU WILL GET BETTER FASTER. If they say to stay in bed, your butt better be in bed. After all, doctors (and Mother) knows best.

10. Clean your room. Used kleenexes in a pile on the floor will next be socially acceptable, no matter how sick you are.

11. Do you. I'm not one to skip class. I'm not one to skip work meetings or ditch friends. After a week of hacking my lungs up, my best advice is to do what feels right for you. At the end of the day, you're the one that's sick and you're the one that knows your body better than anyone else.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
