Anyone who follows hockey or has had access to social media in the past week can see that the Washington Capitals are bringing their A game this year. For the first time in 20 years, they have finally done it, they got to the point where they can now compete in the Eastern Conference Finals. On Monday, May 7, 2018, the Washington Capitals faced off against the Pittsburg Penguins in game six, the final game of the series, it was a tough game and there were no goals scored in the first period.
Leading into the second, Alex Chiasson of the Capitals received a nice pass from Nathan Walker at the 2:13 mark to then sink a shot into the lower right corner of the net right past the goaltender’s body. But not long after, Kris Letang of the Penguins scores an equally nice goal from a shot that was deflected off of a player’s stick and went into the left middle part of the net. In the third period, there were no goals scored which sent both teams into overtime.
It did not take long for the Penguins to lose control of the puck and have it taken away by Alexander Ovechkin who then lead the puck to Evgeny Kuznetsov in an opening where he took full advantage of this opportunity and was able to secure the Capitals spot in moving forward to the next round. Beating the Penguins is a large victory in itself. The Penguins have won the Stanley Cup for the past two years and this win over them has secured that they will not be given the opportunity to win it again.
After the game, the official account of The Stanley Cup tweeted at the Penguins and said, “It’s been a great two years @penguins but I think it’s time we see other people.” To which the Penguins account responded and said “Really? A breakup over tweet?” Then the Stanley Cup account closed with “Not necessarily a breakup. Just a break… for now. But if you want me back, as you know, you’ll have to work for it.” Probably going down as one of the funniest exchanges that have happened between sports accounts on Twitter.
For the dedicated fans who have been let down time and time again by Washington sports and still have supported them, now we have something to be very proud of. I will be rooting for the Washington Capitals in the upcoming games and you can too by live streaming it online, watching it on TV on NBCS, or following the games on Twitter.
