Achieve greatness through growth.

I want to start off by saying this is not a critique of every human existing on this planet.

My intention is to make you think about the person you are and how you can achieve greatness through growth. As we dig deeper, I want you to open your eyes to the possibility of change, maturity and overall improvement.

Although personal growth can’t happen overnight, there are a multitude of ways to grow up. Engaging in meaningful conversations is probably my favorite technique I use with friends, acquaintances and even strangers to build my character as a whole.

Essentially, if you have a deep, purposeful conversation with anyone, it brings you a lot closer together. By engaging in heavy dialogue about your families past, your views on politics, and even your biggest fears, you are putting trust into the person listening to your stories. You are helping each other grow parallel and this aids your relationship for the future. When is the last time you had a meaningful conversation that you felt you grew from personally?

I sat in on an interview with Abby Wambach this past weekend and something powerful she claimed resonated with me deeply. “If you aren’t passionately advocating for change, you are sleeping.” I swear she said those exact words. When you advocate for social movements, you’re not just resisting our society’s values; you’re changing the world.

As an individual, you are providing a way of social change that others can learn from. Young adulthood is the perfect time to find those passions and develop from them. If you are excited about changing society’s structure, you are building yourself up and who you will be in the future.

Practicing self-awareness is something I have been implementing into my daily life and it has truly done wonders. Some people I surround myself with are so unaware of the environment and it truly blows my mind. I don’t want to act like I’m such a mature individual, but for real, these people need to do start recognizing what encompasses them. When you are conscious of your character, you adhere to others feelings better. If you have a clear perception of your personal motives, you’ll be able to understand other people with more meaning and integrity.

It’s time to devote yourself to learning, growing, and being your own person. Once you find a more superior way of spending your time, you’ll feel so much more empowered. Once you stop caring about what people think and fully commit yourself to your motivations, you will blossom. You have the potential to be whoever it is you want to be, so get out there and do what makes you feel like a better person. Develop, evolve, and change the world.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
