Have you ever noticed the lack of female representation in crime shows on television? Most shows have one or two women and then four or five men on a team. Are we still in the age in media where women need to be the minority in this genre?
I'm a crime show fan. I love shows like "Criminal Minds", "Law and Order SVU", and "NCIS". However, the thing all these shows are lacking is women. Just look at the team squads and notice the problem.
Six men and only two women. Were no other women qualified enough for the job? Or maybe they weren't strong enough?
Once again the women are heavily outnumbered. Not only that but the women in this show are constantly being replaced, and the men for the most part have been staple characters throughout the series.
Even in "Law and Order SVU" the women are outnumbered, which is shocking because Olivia Benson is one of the strongest female characters on TV.
I'm not trying to make the argument that all crime show are absolutely terrible because I still watch them and I can still quote half the episodes. However, for anyone who watches these shows it is pretty obvious that women bring a lot to the team. Women are not only caring and compassionate toward the victims but they are smart and can think through the problems. Also women are incredibly strong and can take down serial killers just like the men can. Hopefully the industry will soon realize that women can be more than love interests, and they can play the main characters.
Maybe soon the squads will look like this:
Four girls and one guy. That looks like one legit squad of strong independent women. They look ready to take on the crime in the world!
All the fall shows are getting ready to start back up soon and I look forward to seeing the new characters and I hope to see some more women taking center stage. After all, we run the world ladies.
