It's Summer Time

A few dos and don'ts for these warmer months

It's Summer Time

Summer is basically upon us, except for those few pesky days we had here in Minnesota that dropped into the 40s. As school winds down and summer jobs start, here are a few dos and don’ts for your free time.

DO drink lots of water. The summer heat will take its toll on your body, so you’ll want to keep it hydrated to avoid heat exhaustion.

DON’T go tanning before your vacation. The UV rays from tanning beds can cause minor and serious skin cancers. If you really want a nice tan before heading out to the beach try opting for a lotion or cream self-tanner, avoiding spray tanning where you could possibly inhale the tanner which is recommended to be avoided by the FDA.

DO wear sunscreen while moseying about in the sun. And don’t forget to reapply! As with tanning beds, the sun’s natural UV rays are also very damaging to skin and can cause cancer. If you’re skin is especially sensitive, like mine, consider investing in a nifty hat that will shade your forehead and ears from those bright rays.

DON’T skip a self-care day. Being an in-debt college student, it is so tempting to work as many hours as humanly possible in order to stay ahead of the debt I have accumulated through student loans. But if I don’t let myself relax and take a deep breath between long days and nights, I won’t be able to do my best when it is needed.

DO remember to have fun. Especially knowing that winter is always around the corner here in Minnesota, enjoying the sun, heat, and lack of school is a must. SO get out there, catch up with friends, work hard, and make some good memories!

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
