Whenever I travel outside of New England, people often ask me where I am from. When I respond “Rhode Island” I usually get two reactions, “Oh like ‘Family Guy’” or, “Nice, Long Island!” I then have to go on and explain where Rhode Island is on the map and that Quahog is not an actual town. Although Rhode Island may be the smallest state, there are a few things you can only find within our 1200 miles.
1. Del’s Lemonade
I have traveled all over the U.S., and I think it is safe to say that Del’s Lemonade blows any other frozen lemonade out of the water. Don’t be discouraged if you are not a fan of the cool citrus treat; they have 10 flavors ranging from diet watermelon to blueberry. So next time you are passing through RI, make sure you stop at the sign of the lemon.
2. Coffee Syrup
Yes, coffee milk is actually a drink. Yes, it is the best drink imaginable. When traveling in Rhode Island, you may notice the copious amount of Dunkin' Donuts we have. Needless to say, we love our coffee. So why must we limit it to just a morning pick-me- up? Rhode Island has taken the liberty to create a syrup, similar to chocolate syrup, that will flavor your milk to coffee perfection. Coffee milk has coined the title of Official State Drink of RI!
3. Awful Awful
Don’t let the name deceive you, these ice cream drinks are just like Newport Creamery advertises “Awful big, Awful good." Offered in an impressive range of flavors, this is a must have for anyone who loves milkshakes.
4. Our own language
Not only do Rhode Islanders have thick accents, but we have also made terms that only natives will understand. “Bubblah” also known as a drinking fountain. “Jeet” which translated into English is “Did you eat yet?” “Wicked Cool/Awesome” only used when something is really cool/awesome. Or “Grinder," better known as a sub or a sandwich.
5. Landmark Directions
Traveling more than 15 minutes is in fact a road trip in Rhode Island. Why rely on GPS when you can just follow landmarks? In Rhode Island people do not give directions using street names. Rather, they list landmarks in the general area of your destinations. It can be confusing at first, but after a few months you will know RI like the back of your hand!Rhode Island is one of the most underrated states. It is beautiful, quaint and, although it may be small, it is not too crowded. If you ever want a weekend escape, come on over to RI. You are sure to have a great time.
