I strongly believe in doing all that you can to make a difference in this world, and I have been trying to do that myself. This past summer, I applied to be a campus organizer for a well-known initiative, and I was over the moon when I found out that I got the position. For this school year, I will be the campus organizer at Arizona State University for It's On Us, an initiative that was started three years ago by President Obama to prevent sexual assault on college campuses. Sexual assault is much too common, especially at the collegiate level, and it is up to us to make a change. Here are some statistics from It's On Us, which I believe are very important:
1. 11.2% of all college students experience rape or sexual assault at some point in their college career
2. Female students are 4x more likely to be victims of campus sexual assault than males
3. Among women in college, 9 out of 10 victims know their offender. Only 20% of female victims report the crime to law enforcement
Sexual assault is a horrifying crime, and it is even worse because our society today makes it very hard for victims to come forward with their stories. With victim-blaming so common, too many people who have been assaulted are scared to reach out for help. It is time we change this, but more so than that, it is time we end sexual assault.
College is supposed to be a time where people can happily and safely get an education and to ensure this, we must prevent sexual assault. Be sure to spread awareness, get involved and put in your little part. Together, we can all make a difference.
