The 5 Things You Miss When You Are Home From College

In This Article:

Everyone says that you will miss being home when you go away to college. Funny thing is, there are more things I miss about living at college than I did when I missed living at home. There was just something about living at college that allowed me to truly find myself and it truly did become my second home. When I was first looking at going away to college, I looked at it like just going to school and how it would be nothing else of importance to me. But now, I can say that my college is like my second home and even possibly my future second home. Yes, New Jersey will always be my original home, but because of living on campus, Pennsylvania will always be my second home.

Dining Hall Food

And no the quality of the food is not the reason I am saying I miss the dining hall food. It is the convenience of always finding something to eat for every meal, even if they are having a bad day with food options. At home, you eat what you can find in the house and sometimes that doesn't leave you with many options.

Dorm Beds

I know most people won't agree with me on this one but when I went away to college, my parents turned my old bedroom into an office, and in that office, is a sofa bed for me to sleep on. So yes, I miss my dorm bed terribly. It is and will probably always be more comfortable than this sofa bed.

Live in Best Friends

Being able to walk down the hall or take the elevator to a different floor definitely beats driving over 30 minutes to see your best friends. No matter how much you love your best friends, you love keeping the gas in your tank a little longer, especially with gas prices these days.

Constant On The Go

Being in college can be any way you like it, whether that be constantly on the go doing things or just a mellow afternoon. With all the fees that college makes you pay for, it is nice when there is a 9:00 pm BINGO night you can attend or a movie night in the dorms on Fridays.

Freedom!

Ah! The freedom you get when living on campus is one thing I truly miss. Being able to dictate when things need to be done in the room and not fighting family members for the washer and dryer. Also always knowing your snacks are untouched because there is no one else to eat them when you are out.

It is possible to love your college more than being home in the summers and it is okay to miss being away at college. It might be a little weird if you start confessing to missing the homework and overload of assignments but there is no judgment here. Just remember, if you haven't graduated yet, you still have time to enjoy all of this before you go off in the world and begin to adult. And remember, you can do whatever you want when you are an adult, as long as you don't do something illegal, so this all could continue even when you are an adult.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
