The future is immensely terrifying. There are endless options, yet it seems like a path is built for you by your friends, parents, and teachers. There are many people who help you along the way, but only you decide for yourself. Some get stuck along the way - thinking that people's opinions matter, but they really don't.
Being a junior, guest speakers who are recent graduates come to my classes and talk about their experiences at the company they work for. Assignments for attending the career fair are put on the syllabus. This is helpful in a way; however, it honestly makes me feel like I have to get my whole life together. It seemed like alumni have it all together with the perfect job and great pay, but getting a job right after you graduate isn't easy and you have to work for it. You need to want it. It definitely puts pressure on us. We ask ourselves: Will I get a job lined up before I graduate? How many internships will I need to get a full-time job? Do I want a job badly enough?
Another thing I may want to do is take a gap year between graduating and finding a job. Traveling is one thing that I've wanted to do my whole life - seeing amazing places and discovering the wonders of the world. All this time, I've put this idea on the back burner since college is all about finding a job and preparing for the "future". But what exactly is the future? Is the future that everyone who goes to college will get a job? It is okay to deviate?
The answer to that is: yes. It is really okay to do whatever you want and whatever makes you happiest in the world. Cheesy, I know. All of you who are skeptical might say, "Well, how are you going to make money and support yourself?" You will find a way. Maybe live a simple lifestyle, but what is most important is just to do you.
Lastly, focus on the present. Focus on what you got left of college and make it the best years of your life. Find love, go party, learn things, and make lasting forever friendships. The future will have to wait.
