It's OK To Admit It: You Miss High School
Lauren Gannon

When it came to writing this week's article I was stumped...do I write a funny piece filled with GIFs that I know my friends will share across their timelines? Or maybe I should write something more thought-provoking, like politics (which if we're being honest I know nothing about).

Here I am though, at 1 a.m. in bed, and the idea has finally come to me. High school.

The seniors at my high school just finished up their last day today, and as I scrolled through Twitter my heart hurt a little bit for them as they were so bittersweet about their final day as a Coventry Oaker. I saw the typical post, "These are the last time we'll walk these halls.." and couldn't help but roll my eyes a little. I'll admit, that was me writing those sort of things last year. As someone who just finished their first year of college, I wanted to reach my arms through the screen and shake them and say, "Once you go to college, none of this will matter, you won't miss it."

And as much as I don't want to say it... you will miss it sometimes.

I love college. Even that is an understatement. I love my school and everything about it. I love the new friends I've made, I love my major, I love the social aspect, and I even love walking around campus on a rainy day and purposely splashing through puddles in my Hunter boots despite the fact that I'm eighteen years old. The point is, is that I love being a college student.

However, I loved high school. I definitely would not say that I had the best four years of my life there, but I really did enjoy it. It's only when I see the fun events, such as prom, that I realize all of the fun memories I made at school.

I miss the nights my friends and I would grab iced coffees at Dunkin before football games, even though it was forty degrees outside. We would all be more concerned about posting Snapchat stories than actually watching the game (though to be honest, we did lose every game), but it's a memory that I always think about when I think of high school.

During Halloween, my high school does an event called The Hunt. Upperclassmen make teams of four people and dress up in coordinating costumes, to which we'd then compete in a scavenger hunt around the school's campus at night. My junior year I did it and my team won best costumes (now I feel justified in skipping a cross country meet to participate)! The next year? Well...we didn't win shit.

In March my high school holds its annual Spirit Week, where each class pretty much fights to the death about who has the most spirit. All week we wear crazy costumes and attend events such as a Lip Sync, Anything Goes and a Dance Battle. Ask anyone who graduated from my high school, they'll probably say this is the event they miss the most.

When it comes to the high school dances, I get nostalgic. Like most high school girls, I lived for those dances. Going to the mall to get my makeup and hair professionally done and then feeling like a queen all night? Count me in. Don't get me wrong, I live for seeing everyone's pictures on Instagram, but I miss the feeling of walking into the gorgeous venue and feeling like Beyonce.

And as for being a senior? Well they say it's the best year of high school for a reason. My high school takes being a senior seriously. At the end of the year we have two events solely dedicated to the seniors: Senior Supper and Class Day. Senior Supper is a banquet held for the senior class at the picturesque Quidnessett Country Club, where there's dancing all night and bonding activities. To be honest, it blows prom out of the water. And Class Day, you ask? It's the moving up ceremony for the junior class, where the seniors wear their caps and gowns to school and say their final goodbyes before graduation. Very heartfelt.

Anyways...I could go on for awhile about the memories I've made in high school. While I could sit here and front about how much I hated my high school experience, I would just be lying. Is college better? Absolutely. But if we're being honest here, there is a piece of my heart that will always belong in those tinged, yellow hallways.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

The Importance Of Being A Good Person

An open letter to the good-hearted people.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
