It's OK To Not Be 'OK'

Sometimes, you're not at your best.

For millennials, our world is dominated by social media. Our lives are documented through a camera lens, posted for the world to see. Or at least the parts of our lives that we want people to see.

That's where a lot of millennials struggle the most. You only see a certain part of people's daily lives, the best and most important aspects. People are very selective about what they post and when, so you can never truly know what's going on in their lives when the camera isn't on.

A lot of times people will also use social media as a way to ignore their problems. They could be having such a rough time but they brush it off because they have a nice looking Instagram or they're super funny on Twitter. They think that if people like them on social media then nothing else matters. Or even worse, they think admitting that they aren't okay is bad.

I'm here today to say that it's okay to not be 'okay'. It really, truly is.

Life isn't perfect, we've heard this saying 1,000 times over, and will continue to hear it forever. But it's so, so true. Sometimes you're having the time of your life and you couldn't be happier, but other times you're struggling to find joy in anything you do. And that's perfectly okay.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with not feeling like yourself, they're your feelings and your feelings aren't invalid. You have a right to feel however you feel, and if that's not 100%, then that's okay. No one can tell you how to feel.

Take everything you see online with a grain of salt because odds are, that same person you see having an "amazing" life is probably struggling as well. And that's okay! You don't have to post about having a rough time on social media, that's not expected. As long as you post what you're comfortable with, you're fine!

Just like not admitting on social media that you have a problem, admitting that you do is perfectly okay too! Not being 100% is okay, and that's something our generation needs to work on. You don't have to always be okay and having the time of your life, it will come! Don't rush it, live in the present and see where that takes you.

Not being okay is okay, and as soon as you realize that, the happier you'll be and the sooner things will get better. Don't be afraid to admit it, because it's okay.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
