It's Okay To Be Independent

Friends are important. Emotionally, we need other people. It’s unhealthy to keep things bottled up to ourselves all the time. But, it’s also unhealthy to rely on others for everything. Recognizing that you can be okay independently is an important life lesson. Once you learn that you can be independent, you gain a whole new self-confidence. I was always told that it made me seem cold when I chose to be independent rather than rely on a group. No one ever told me that it was okay to be independent, that is until I witnessed the nature of an intern on the television show “Grey’s Anatomy”, Cristina Yang. These are the lessons I learned through her character's evolution about how I can be fiercely independent without coming across cold to "my people." Let’s be real, sometimes we all need somebody to be there for us. We can’t do it all alone. It’s figuring out how to balance reliance and independence that is the key to happiness and success.

I learned that my dreams are worth it. You don’t want to end up regretting not going after what you’ve wanted your entire life. You have to stand tall and if you want something, go for it. Sometimes that road is better taken alone.

I learned that it’s okay to not want to tell people your business 24/7. It is important to keep things to yourself. People do not need to know everything. Privacy is important. Sometimes, we don’t want all the attention and everyone knowing our secrets.

I learned not to let a guy or friends stand in the way of what I want. Friends are meant to support you, not to take away from your goals and your aspirations. If you find that a friendship or a relationship is hindering you, it's time to let go.

I learned that when I put my mind to something and focus, I can accomplish anything. Doing something alone is very empowering and leaves you with a sense of accomplishment like none other.

But the most important lesson I learned is that you can’t alienate people along the way. You have to find the balance between independence and dependence. You have to be a person your friends can rely on. At the top, it will get lonely if you are all alone. Let's face it, we all need our person from time to time. Some journeys you need to take alone, but some you need a friend by your side

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

winter

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
