Holy Guacamole!
Did you know that avocados are a fruit? Did you know that these little guys pack more potassium than a banana? Did you know avocados have multipurpose? You'll be surprised to learn that the answer is yes to all of the above questions.
Avocados are a native to South Central, Mexico and are indeed a fruit. They are part of the berry family, actually. Yes, you heard me. Crazy, right? Early documents show their existent dating back to as early as 16th century. Avocados have become one of the best selling fruits in America in the past years. Statistics show the consumption of avocados in the United States has gone up every year for the past 15 years ago. According to the USDA, avocado consumption has grown from 2lbs per person to 7lbs since 2002.
There is no denying the popularity these alligator-green, textured, and pear-shaped fruits have spawned, and you can see why. Not only are they a culinary delicacy, but their source of vitamins and nutrients surpass and have even come to replace traditional favorites. Take a banana for instance: one cup of banana = 806mg of potassium and 2g of fiber, and a cup of avocado = 1,166mg of potassium and 5g of fiber. Amazing, right? And because of their high fat content, they work great as a moisturizer, facial mask, and hair conditioner which works perfectly for those DIY beauty products.
