Depression is not a joke.
Depression is so common among individuals nowadays and no one seems to understand how serious it really is. Most people don't take the time to try and understand how someone with depression is really feeling. I have seen time and time again someone told they're "depressed" to get attention. I have seen time and time again someone be told their depression is affecting them less than it actually is. Here's what I have to say to those people who refuse to understand: SHUT YOUR MOUTH AND LISTEN UP.
Individuals who suffer from depression feel as though they cannot speak up and say there is something bothering them. They feel as though they'll be judged for what they feel. They feel as though it's a crime to be sad and closed off. I know exactly how they feel because not only have I suffered from depression, but a family member of mine does as well. I see exactly how others react towards her depression and it's awful. She is never taken seriously until she's an absolute wreck. She isn't noticed until she feels so down, she explodes. Why do we let it get that far? She shouldn't have to cause a scene or cry herself to sleep or wish her life would just end because we aren't paying enough attention. She feels like she's screaming and no one can hear her or they're choosing not to hear her.
We can never actually understand what someone is going through, so please, don't be so quick to pass judgement. We make people feel like they can't voice how they feel because they're so afraid of being belittled and told that their problems don't matter. I swear, people with severe depression can never win. They attempt to speak out for help then are told that they are just doing it for attention. They stay quiet and self-harm or commit suicide and then are told they're selfish. How many severely depressed people have to end their lives before this stops?
People are bullied every day. People are blackmailed and ridiculed. People are judged for almost everything they do. People are called crazy and dramatic. What does this help, though? NOTHING.
We all need to take a step back and help those who need it. Even if they aren't physically telling you they want help, be a friend and ask if they're OK. Be a friend and just talk to them about whatever it is that's bothering them. Let's help people get better and get to a better state of mind before they decide their life has no value. Let's make a difference and not be the issue.
For those who suffer from depression: I hope and pray that everything works out for you. Don't ever let someone tell you how to feel. Don't ever let someone tell you you're being dramatic. Don't ever let someone convince you that your life has no value. Don't ever be ashamed for reaching out for help. Your lives and feelings are more important than anyone else's opinion of you. Remember, it's OK not to be OK. Don't ever be silenced.
