For the first and, hopefully, last time in my life there is a country song that I cannot relate to on any level, and I completely disagree with in almost every way: "Different for Girls" by Dierks Bently.
After my first real heartbreak (yes, I was definitely in love) I cried once for a total of five minutes before looking in the mirror and realizing how stupid I was. No guy and no human are worth crying over. When I looked in that mirror I began to laugh, and I’ve never cried over a guy again. Yeah, the relationship was over with, but that was because it was not meant to be. Life went on and I know I will end up with whom I am supposed to be with. Girls, you don’t need to sit around moping all day. Get out and enjoy life while you’re still single.
Here are six lyrics from the aforementioned song debunked:
1. "She don't text her friends and say, 'I gotta get laid tonight.'"
Girls have indeed texting me saying they “have to get laid tonight.”
2. “It's different for girls when their hearts get broke. They can't tape it back together with a whiskey and coke.”
Actually, girls can, and have, “taped it back together” with a drink. Maybe it wasn’t whiskey and coke, but any drink can do that trick.
3. “They can't just switch it off every time they feel something. A guy gets drunk with his friends and he might hook up.”
Girls can go home with someone and have no strings attached. We all have physical needs, and it’s not just guys that can do that without having the emotional attachments.
When I go out with my friends, they know I’m out to have a good time, and that means if I'm single I may go dance with a guy and make out with him, and such -- especially if I’ve just gotten done talking to someone. That’s just how I recoup. That’s actually how a lot of girls recoup. Yes, we get called a special word for that, but if guys can do that why can’t we?
4. “She don't scroll through her phone just looking for a Band-Aid.”
Really? I think we all have that “band-aid” in our phone that we can call up at any point when we’re feeling alone and want some attention.
5. “When the going gets tough, yeah, the guys they can just act tough.”
I most certainly put on a smile and act tough around everyone because I don’t want people to think I’m lost without so and so. This acting eventually turns into a reality and I genuinely want nothing to do with that person again.
6. “When love disappears, they can't pretend it was never there.”
The one line of the song I do agree with. Going back to my first heartbreak. I legit told myself and all of my friends that what I had was never love. I believed that love didn’t exist and it was all just a lie. Later on in my short life, I came to the realization that I did have love. It just wasn’t my last love. I think that we will always “love” those who we have told those special three words to. That feeling doesn’t mean we want to spend the rest of our lives with them. We just have real care for their lives to turn out how they want it to, and we hope they too find their soul mate.
I'm not a die hard feminist by any means, but aside from that one verse, this song makes women sound lame and weak, and I don’t approve. Sorry, Dierks. Much love to the rest of your album, though.
