October 31st is a day full of magic, mischief and monsters. It's a day where everyone feels like a kid again as they run through town dressed as witches, vampires, animals or Harambe. There's a spooky chill in the air that makes your hair stand up on the back of your neck and your pupils dilate in wonder. It's an amazing feeling. However, you better finish all of your Halloween festivities by 11:59 pm, because as soon as the clock strikes midnight, everyone seems to think it's Christmas time.
Don't get me wrong, I love Christmas just as much as any elf at the north pole, but the first of November is simply not the time to start celebrating. By the time December comes around, you'll be burnt out, not to mention strung out on eggnog. Also, starting your Christmas celebrations on November 1st is completely disrespectful to Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving is what we really should be gearing up for right now. To me, Thanksgiving is what officially kicks off the Christmas season. Maybe it's because my mom had a rule that we couldn't watch Christmas movies until after Thanksgiving, or maybe it's because I have an unhealthy obsession with potatoes, but we need to dedicate November 1 - 24 to the holiday where we give thanks for all of the blessings in our lives before we make a mile long list of stuff we want other people to buy us. Also, MASHED POTATOES!!! (Stuffing and turkey and sweet potato pie are pretty good too.)
For everyone celebrating Christmas today, I understand. It's the most wonderful time of the year. But let's take the holidays one day at a time and fully enjoy Thanksgiving too. It's the one holiday where the gift you receive is time with your family, not to mention a delightful food coma.
