I am a White, Catholic female. Those are three characteristics that to some people are defining. Those three words help define who I am, but they are not all that I am. I am more than the stereotypes placed upon those titles.
Just because I am White does not mean that I am racist. I understand that there is such a thing as White privilege and that I will never know what it is like to be black nor to ever have to fear for my life because of the color of my skin. But just because I am White does not mean that I view all black people a certain way. Just because I am White and I do have a certain privilege that comes with that, does not mean I asked for it. It does not mean that I value White lives over black lives. It does not mean I don't shed some tears when I see another black life taken by a police officer. Being White also does not mean that I think all cops are bad people. Being White can affect my way of thinking, but I do not let it.
Just because I am Catholic does not mean I live and breathe by everything the bible says. Just because I love God and believe in heaven does not mean I don't think bad people exist in the world. Bad people do exist and bad things do happen to good people, but that doesn't mean I stop believing in the good of the world. As a Catholic people expect me to be against abortions. I know and I understand that every human life is valuable, but I also understand that there are certain circumstances that test where people fall on this subject. I think if a woman is raped and she ends up pregnant, that she should be able to decide whether or not to continue with the pregnancy. That woman would live everyday of her life with her child as a constant reminder of how her body was entered by someone who was not welcomed. Being Catholic can affect my way of thinking, but I do not let it.
Just because I am a female does not mean I hate all males. It means that I think I deserve to be paid for doing just as good of a job as a male who does the same exact thing. It means that I believe I should have the rights to my own body, just as males have the right to their own body. It means that I should not have to watch mine or my friends drinks at a party and hope that no one drugs us. It means I should not be so scared to walk home alone at any time of the day. It means that I should not have to be afraid of a male no matter his skin color, no matter the time of day. Being a female does not mean I'm weaker than a male. Being a female could make me be scared and feel weak and affect my overall way of thinking, but I can not and will not let it.
I am a college student in a country that just recently elected a new president that will take office in January. I do care about politics and the future of my country, but that is not the point of this article. The point is the type of person that was elected. The point is that because of this election the nation has been exposed to how half the nation truly thinks and feels.
I am a student who is spending four years of her life studying media and I understand how much of an influence the media has that we as everyday Americans are made aware of, but what I have been exposed to has disgusted me.
I am a White Catholic female. In retrospect most people may look at me and think I may be happy with the direction our nation is headed. But if you looked deeper into me as a person rather than those three titles, you would realize that that is not the case.
Just because I am White does not mean I think of my race as superior, no matter who does. I have friends of other races and their race does not change the type of person that they are. I would never want to see anything bad happen to a black male just because at this point in time, people believe expressing their hatred and racism is okay, because it is not. Just because a man that is the face of my nation thinks women should not be entitled to their rights of their body, does not mean that is true or that women should have those rights stripped from them. I cannot even express how hard it is as a female to know that a man who has expressed sexually assaulting women and is going on trial for rape is in charge of my nation. How are women ever going to take a stand when there is an example laid out right in front of them that a man can take advantage of a woman's body and people are 100% okay with it?
It's not about politics anymore, its about being a decent person. This article is not me voicing my political opinion, I'll be 100% honest and say I was not happy with either candidate. But I do think the nation as a whole needs to reflect on the time of people that we are and to start treating each other like human beings again.
