It seems like every week society takes another step towards making Americans look dumber than they already do. First it was Crocs, then it was constantly making stupid faces at their phones using Snapchat, and now, Pokemon Go has taken over. When will these atrocities end?
At first it started out slow, you would see a few people here and there obsessed over the map on their phone with invisible Pokemon. As the week has progressed, however, I couldn't turn a corner without seeing someone walking in literal circles trying to catch something that wasn't even there.
I get that this excitement will die out in a little bit like every other fad app, but for now, I must suffer while watching fellow peers be consumed by their cellphones even more. It's hard enough to navigate the sidewalks while people are obliviously texting and walking, but now I have to deal with people popping out of alleyways and making sudden U-turns.
Maybe this all sounds a little harsh coming from a girl that hasn't even played the game for herself, but I would like to keep my sanity intact by not giving into the pressures of mainstream society. Seeing what this app has done to people just deters me from getting it even more.
No doubt they're looking for Pokemon, because only the brave go into this quest alone. Herds of people usually spread out and reconvene when their Pokemon has been captured; no one communicating, just glued to their phones trying to catch 'em all.
It's kind of sad if you think about it. We've become so bored with going outside and experiencing the world that we need an application to persuade us to enjoy our surroundings. I've seen numerous Facebook posts and memes that people are utilizing their time to capture Pokemon as a way to workout as well.
People are even taking bigger measures to reach Ash's capturing level. The scariest part about this game is that people are willing to risk their lives by using the app while driving to get Pokemon that are just out of walking distance. Not only that, but people have forgotten all boundaries, leaving no building or backyard unseen.
Honestly, I'm kind of embarrassed that just one 'good' idea can brainwash a whole nation in a matter of weeks. All it takes is a popular 90's TV show and the power of technology to create something that society just can't get enough of.
Most of you are probably going to diss me for writing this, but for me, Pokemon Go is a Pokemon No.
