It's A New Year With Some New Goals

Hey, everyone!

Welcome to 2017! This year, I thought I should do something that I don't normally do. I decided to create some new year's resolutions for myself. I haven't done this before, so I feel like it is time to follow the stereotypical trend of resolution making. Oh, well. These are actual goals that I am working on. Here is the list of ten goals that I have:

1. Get in shape.

I have always felt self-conscious about my looks. However, this last semester has helped push me to view myself differently. One person told me something important. He said," You can only love the changes you do to yourself, if you love yourself before the changes." I have already spoken to a couple of my friends about this goal. Some of us are going to the gym together about three or four times a week.

2. Eat healthier.

Cutting back on some of the junk food and beverages will help me get into shape. I will cut out soda. Also, I will cut back on sweets and greasy food.

3. Earn more money.

I work two different jobs on campus at the moment. Both of these jobs help me support myself in paying for my college tuition. Now, I am looking for an easy job that I can do to earn a little extra money to purchase some items that I need.

4. Create an organization binder.

This will help me create a more organized daily life style. In the binder, I can track my weight goal, spending habits, saving habits and more.

5. Get all A's this semester.

I have four English classes, so this will be a tough goal. However, I know that if I work hard, I will be able to achieve this goal.

6. Learn a new language.

Right now, I am a double major in English and foreign languages. At the moment, I am focusing on French. Also, I am learning sign language to be able to communicate with my four year old cousin more efficiently.

7. Pick up new hobbies.

A person that I care about is at basic training for the navy. After he left, I started to practice art. I am horrible at drawing, but some of the photos are starting to turn out nicely. This also helps me practice making different DIY projects by being more creative.

8. Write more in my journal.

I love writing in my journal. There is only one problem: I continue to forget to write each day. So, my journal jumps around to weeks and months later. I will need to practice writing daily in my journal.

9. Be the best Odyssey writer that I can be.

I love writing for Odyssey. It helps me practice my writing techniques that I learn in English. Also, I have the opportunity to practice my editing skills.

10. Take care of any payments that I have.

I have a credit card for Kay Jeweler's to help build credit. I am planning on finishing up that payment. Also, I am working on saving to get a new car. My last one broke down and will cost too much to fix.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
