Today (January 21) is National Squirrel Appreciation Day. Forget yesterday's inauguration, this is what really matters in the world. My campus carries a plethora of these furry, frisky, and disease-ridden rodents. In celebration of these lil dudes, let's take a look at what makes these animals so great.
1. They're Vegan
They want to save the cows just as much as you do. By surviving on nuts and berries, they not only are able to retain a svelte frame, but are able to positively impact the environment as well.
2. Eight Squirrels & Counting
Female squirrels are fruitful creatures who give birth several times a year with anywhere from 2-8 offspring per litter. And you thought Michelle was hardcore.
3. Squirrel vs. Wild
Go away, Bear. These guys live in the wild 24/7, and must survive in forest trees without a video camera and a documentary crew just in case something goes wrong.
4. They Are Way Smarter Than You
You stay awake in the winter, where you binge on Netflix, drink coffee, and shiver. Meanwhile, they somehow cracked the code, and as a reward, they get to exist in perpetual sleep for months. Meanwhile, if I sleep more than fourteen hours straight, I feel like I'm gonna die. These guys never have to be awake during the winter and get to stay away from all the drama involving the election and all things Kardashian.
So today, go out and hug a squirrel; tell him how much you appreciate him! Metaphorically, of course, unless you really want to get rabies.
