Living in The South, you hear some pretty disgusting, derogatory things when you express an opinion that isn't conservative. Unfortunately, I live in a place where people want to vote away a woman's right to choose. It wasn't until I was old enough to do my own research and develop my own opinion that I became pro-choice. When talk about abortion comes up, I often stay silent to avoid the awkward conversation that I don't think the government should have any say in what I do with my body. We have fought so hard over the last hundred years for women to have rights. We cannot backtrack as a country and lose what we worked so hard for.
Here's the hard truth Conservatives can't seem to swallow: making abortion illegal will not get rid of abortion. It will cause women to have unsafe, under the table abortions. Another hard truth: you don't have to be pro-abortion to be pro-choice! I am pro-choice because I do not want the government to have any say in what I do with my body. Medical decisions pertaining to my body should be between me and my doctor only. No one should threaten a woman considering abortion, no one should guilt her into doing what they believe is right. If someone is not financially or physically capable of bringing a child into the world, it is selfish to do so anyways. A woman should be able to do what she thinks is best for her and her situation, not what some old men in the White House think.
Of course, late term abortion should have restrictions, and it does. Contrary to what you read on Rightwingdaily.com, you cannot have an abortion at nine months. In the United States, you cannot have an abortion after 24 weeks. And even then, the circumstances must be life threatening. No one is fighting for final-trimester abortions. We want to keep our right to choose what is best for us. Situations like this cannot be generalized, it is a case-by-case matter. I pray the people elected into office this month understand this and don't try to take away the rights of our bodies.
