It's The Little Things

It's the little things in life that make us feel the best.

I am a full believer in the simple things in life making you happy. Having little things that excite you, cheer you up and encourage you--it gives you a different feeling of happiness. It's the little things we don't really notice but they always do the best job at cheering us up. When someone remembers all of the small things you love, you feel a little touched--surprised that someone remembered that little thing about you. I believe the simple things also give us more of an appreciation for the small things, the quick moments and simple gestures.

I personally have many things on my list of small random things that can cheer me up in an instant:marshmallows, palm trees and cold chocolate are only a few on that list. All of my friends who know me extremely well know some of the little things that can make my attitude go from negative to positive within minutes. My family all know how to cheer me up quickly, and it's always with something super simple. I believe that it doesn't take much to fix someone's mood. Even having someone ask you how you are doing that day or someone tell you to have a wonderful afternoon can heighten a mood.

A lot of the things on my list are food which isn't very surprising. If we're being honest, most of the time I'm in a cranky mood because I'm hangry and need something to eat and nothing hits the spot more than on of my favorite candies or favorite foods. If I'm having a fit and someone gives me a pack of Mallow Cups, I'll be set for the day. Those things could make me forget about everything that could have been pissing me off that day. A lot of the other stuff on my list are stuff in nature. Trees, flowers, the beach. The natural world gives me a feeling of comfort and tranquility that instantly fixes a bad mood. But everyone is different, everyone's list of their favorite stuff is different and everyone's moods can change due to tons of different things. I encourage people to sit down and think about all of the small little things that make them happy. It'll remind you to appreciate the little things while also aiding as some assistance with your bad moods and terrible days.

The saying "it's the simple things in life" rings so true when you sit down and think about it. Think about all the times you felt like crap and think about what you or someone did to make it better. Guaranteed most of the time it was something small and unnoticed at the time that made you feel better.

So, next time you feel like ripping your hair out and you or someone cheers you up, recognize what they did to help you out. I bet it's something so small but I also bet it;s one of your favorite things.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
