In September of 2013, a little album called "Days Are Gone" by Haim was released to the world. Now, this album has been the soundtrack to my life so far--it makes you feel things and also makes you want to dance around in your undies at 2 am.
After many years of waiting and listening to those 11 songs on repeat, their second album was announced about a month ago and I was overjoyed. A little background about the band: Haim consists of three sisters from Los Angeles Este, Danielle, and Alana Haim. Their music is literally for anyone; even my mom jams to this band.
On July 6th "Something To Tell You" was released and I immediately went to the store and bought a physical copy. Just looking at the aesthetic of this album it is so summer: the CD is yellow and the picture on the front looks bright and exciting. So get your summer playlists ready because this will be your soundtrack for these hot summer days.
Track One - Want You Back
The opening to this album is also the first single off of the album. If you've seen the video it consists of the girls dancing down the streets of LA. It's so simple, yet one of my favorite videos ever because of the aesthetic and the personality the girls bring. The girls said in an interview that the song was originally much slower with just an acoustic guitar to back it up but has now evolved into a fun and danceable song that you would play on a car ride with your besties.
This song is about someone who hurt the person they were with because they didn't realize what they had and weren't ready to be with that person. Now they miss them and want them back. She's asking for forgiveness and another chance to give him what he wants.
Favorite Lyric:
I know it’s hard to hear it
And it may never be enough
But don’t take it out on me now
'Cause I blame it all on myself
Track Two - Nothing's Wrong
After the perfect opening track, we move to "Nothing's Wrong." My initial reaction to this song was that it reminded me of a mixture between "Wilson Phillips" and "Shania Twain" which made me very happy because I love both of those artists very, very much. Anyway, I immediately loved this track because I had been in a relationship with someone who didn't let me know they were having mixed feelings about us, so I was like YES I CAN RELATE! I always love songs that explain my feelings better than I can and Haim always does that for me.
This song is about when you look back at a relationship and the feelings have changed but no one is saying anything. Once you say something about what's wrong it becomes real, and you are both trying to make it work but you can't.
Favorite Lyric:
Was it all in my mind?
I was so foolish, I was so blind
Why do we do this to each other, baby
Heartbreak by design
Track Three - Little Of Your Love
"Little Of Your Love" was the third single released off of "Something To Tell You." Now my immediate reaction was surprise because it sounded country and rock and old school. So I was intrigued and already blown away by what these girls are doing--AND ITS ONLY TRACK THREE!!! Anyway yes, I was not expecting it but now that I've heard it, I can never go back.
This track is obviously about asking someone to fall in love with you like, "look at us you should love me and we could be great together," but the other person is being stubborn. It seems like it should be in a musical scene or a fun 80s prom scene.
Favorite Lyric:
I've never felt nothing like that
Looking at you, looking right back
You say nothing is ever as good as it seems
Track Four - Ready For You
This track is so pop and bubbly and very "Wilson Phillips." This song makes you want to move your shoulders and sing in the mirror holding a hairbrush. It's a bit chaotic and crazy but the harmonies at the end are so beautiful and lift your spirits up.
This song is essentially about going out and getting what you want. The girl maybe wasn't ready for this guy, or was nervous to get to know him, but now she is ready and wants him so she is gonna go and get him.
Favorite Lyric:
I keep calling 'til your guard comes down
'Cause I wanna keep you around
'Cause we started something good
Track Five - Something To Tell You
This song is the track that the album is named after, and I think once you listen to this song you realize it really does sum up the album. This whole album is telling someone something; each song is something you need to say. This song is so pretty and spacious; it really leaves room for the meaning of the song. The bass is also amazing in this song and really brings everything to life like it is the heartbeat of this song.
This song is about how she has something to say but she doesn't want to because then things will be over. She wants to hold onto that moment before it all collapses but she knows she has to let go. I find this extremely relatable because I also have a hard time letting go and saying goodbye.
Favorite Lyric:
But I never stopped or gave up
I couldn't ever let you go
Track Six - You Never Knew
You can tell that they worked with "Dev Hynes" from "Blood Orange" on this song with the dreamlike vocals and bass. This song makes you feel like you are floating on a pink cloud.
"You Never Knew" touches on the same topic of being in this relationship where they need to talk, but are afraid to and keep letting the days go on without talking about things. He couldn't take it and was too afraid to say anything until it was too late. UGH SO RELATABLE...HAIM BE MY FRIENDS.
Favorite Lyric:
You woke up from another dream, another fight you didn't mean
Still, time after time
I came running to get you
Track Seven - Kept Me Crying
This is probably one of my favorites off of this album because of the lyrics and the rocky sound to this song. It feels like it shoould be played in a bar or something. I feel like I need to put on some leather and go to a gritty bar.
This song is about when a guy breaks your heart but you still love him and hope he will come back. It doesn't matter that he hurt you and moved on. You still cry and pine after him, but he only calls you when he's drunk and doesn't really remember who you are.
Favorite Lyric:
When you leave, I can't stop my heart hurting
Hurts to say I keep thinking you're staying
If you want me, I'll be waiting for you
If you call me, I'll pick up
No, I shouldn't, but I can't give up of you
Track Eight - Found It In Silence
This song needs to be played in an inspirational scene where the girl finally realizes the guy is bad for her and leaves him. Until then I will play it and stare dramatically out the window pretending I am that girl. The song is so warm and sunny and hopeful, perfect for those deciding to let go of someone who has hurt them. The way the harmonies build up and the violin comes in really brings it all together.
This song is about finally realizing that a person is bad for you, and you need to let go and move on because it is what's best for you.
Favorite Lyric:
Three fingers on the edge
You always talk me down in the end
Made me think you were right, all this time
Not this time, not this time
Both of us, holding back
But you were the most guilty of that
Track Nine - Walking Away
"Walking Away" is very minimal and calm, perfect for a late night drive when the sun is going down and the sky is turning purple. You can close your eyes and really feel this song pump through your veins. The girls really did an amazing job with this one; it's very different than what they've done before and the vocals on the chorus are so beautiful.
"Walking Away" talks about waiting for a guy but getting tired of it and deciding to walk away because there isn't anything he could do to fix it.
Favorite Lyric:
What were you around when you were
Trying not think about it, baby
Running up and down the stairs
'Til there's nothing left between us but what we won't say
Track Ten - Right Now
This is my favorite track on the album. It was released in a video to tease the album and I instantly fell in love. "THE GIRLS ARE BACK" was my instant reaction, but later listening to it in my detail I ended up crying and feeling so many emotions. Even now listening to it makes me want to hug them. The vocals are so raw and so emotional, helped by the piano that comes through on the track. I love the bridge and the way it builds to this spoken word that breaks your heart into a million pieces. UGH. I am getting emotional right now just writing this.
This song is about a guy who breaks her heart and then comes back later to try to get back together. But the girl knows he fooled her already and she can't let him back in. You can feel that it's hard for her to say that but she knows it's for the best.
Favorite Lyric:
I wasn't even in the running
Already had your mind made up
You left me searching for a reason
Why'd you leave? Left me in the dust
Track Eleven - Night So Long
This song is one of those ones that you would put your lighter up in the air to at a concert. "Night So Long" sounds like a classic song already released 10 years ago but it isn't, it was released right now in 2017. CRAZY! I love this so much it makes my heart hurt and my eyes leak and my feelings pour out of me. "Night So Long" is so minimal with just a repeated verse and an outro but it still manages to be the perfect closer to the album and a really raw song.
This song is about the night dragging on as you say goodbye to someone who you loved and except loneliness. I AM MAYBE CRYING RIGHT NOW...
Favorite Lyric:
I say goodbye to love again
In loneliness, my only friend
In loneliness, my only fear
The nights end
Then I say goodbye to love once more
No shadow darkening the door
Until your memory is gone
The night, so, long
So that brings us to the end of Haim's sophomore album "Something To Tell You." We danced and we cried. We asked for love and then we sent love away. This album is perfect for the summer and perfect for everyone, no matter what type of music you like or how old you are.
Thank you, Haim! Your music takes me on such a journey and always comes at the perfect time in my life.
