Driving Alone is Liberating

There have been countless scenarios where I drive friends here and there. However, it’s different when you drive your friends out of state and for long-distant journeys. After driving a few friends out of state and out of the country, I have realized that I prefer to drive alone. Here are some reasons why:

  1. No Talking

There is something liberating about not being able to talk during long-distant trips-- it’s liberating. It brings forth peace, tranquility, and solitude. You don’t have to worry about another person’s problems and issues on your journey-- you can worry about yourself or simply not worry at all because it is your trip, after all! It’s not being selfish, it’s being respectful about your self-care and alone time.

2. Mind-Relaxing

When no one is around you, in your car, for hundreds of miles, it is truly mind-relaxing. You get to clear your mind: You do not let your thoughts rule you. You simply observe everything that is around you and soon become grateful for all that you see. I believe talking and thoughts will get in the way of your peace of mind and solitude with yourself and the world. Just taking in all of the sights is as mind-relaxing as it can get.

3. Self-Thinking

There is nothing more liberating than being able to think for oneself. You don’t have anyone else near you to interrupt your thought process; nor do you have another person to influence the way you think. Your thoughts are completely independent and not dependent on anyone else. You get to think whatever you want when you want.

4. You can do whatever you want

When driving alone, the best part is being able to do whatever you want. If you get bored with a certain song, you can change it to whatever you want to listen to. If you want to stop to get a quick bite to eat or to use the bathroom, you can do that, too. Being in control of your own vehicle and not having to worry about anyone being your passenger means that you have complete freedom to do whatever you want-- that is, as long as you drive responsibly.

5. It’s not because I’m selfish

Driving along does not make mean selfish, nor does it define me as being selfish. It simply means I am taking the self care I need in order to enjoy a trip by myself. Everyone needs a break from everyone and everything from time-to-time. It is healthy and relaxing to be able to provide yourself with a little break to yourself, without everyone and without worrying about everyone and everything for a while. So go ahead: Take that road trip by yourself and have no regrets! Trust me, it will be worth it!

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

10 Reasons To Thank Your Best Friend

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
