One year ago, I wrote this article and thus began my journey as an Odyssey writer.
Since then I've written nearly 50 articles and edited even more. I have undoubtedly grown as a writer and individual in my time here. This past year has been an opportunity, and as I move on to college in the fall, it is time for me to also move on to new opportunities. So with that, I plan to publish my last article next week, and right now, I'd like to share my Odyssey experience.
Writing for Odyssey is a commitment, no doubt. Producing a weekly 500 word article that I am proud of and eager to share is not an easy task. Some weeks, writer's block strikes, and it's more difficult than others. In the midst of a busy life, it can even feel impossible.
Nevertheless, I encourage you to take that jump of commitment into something outside of your comfort zone and challenge yourself. Write about things that are near and dear to your heart. It's not always going to be the things that are easy to write about.
I've always loved reading and writing, but the maths and sciences are more of my thing. But writing isn't just for the English scholar — it's for everyone and anyone who desires a chance to express themselves and be heard.
Writing for Odyssey has been eye-opening. I have edited and read several articles that I ardently disagree with. Likewise, I have come across many articles that I completely connect to. And that's the world. I have even interacted with these writers and learned much from their perspectives. It's refreshing to know that Odyssey isn't just controlled by a certain demographic or group but rather by individuals who want to write.
But even more, writing for Odyssey has been rewarding. I have not written to satisfy an audience — I write to share my story, opinion or interest.
It's been real, Odyssey Online. I will miss you, but at least I can use my Oxford commas now.
