I grew up outside of Ithaca my whole life and I stand by it being one of my favorite places. I’ve traveled all over and outside of the country and I always still find myself seeing Ithaca as one of the best places to visit, and this is why!
1. The Gorges (obviously)
Ithaca is famous for its collection of gorges, there’s dozens just within a few mile radius. Some require strenuous hiking; others you can see from your car. Whether you want to hike a couple miles or just drive by, the view will be totally worth it.
2. Cornell University and Ithaca College
Both of these school are major schools and are widely renowned all across the country. Students come from not just all over the country but all over the world to achieve an education here. The campuses are stunning— Cornell is home to the botanic gardens which are a sight on their own. Outside of the campuses is Collegetown, a small part of Ithaca with bars, restaurants and shops directed at the students of these schools. Even if you don’t go to either school or have no intention on attending, they may just be worth visiting!
3. Ithaca Commons
Downtown Ithaca is home to what is called the commons, or also known as my favorite place in the city. The commons holds a multitude of restaurants, shops and entertainment. During the summer there are outdoor movie showings right in the middle of the commons, and there is live music weekly!
4. Cayuga Lake
Cayuga Lake is right in the heart of the Finger Lakes (which on their own are easily one of the hottest summer vacation destinations in the state). Ithaca is located on the south end of Cayuga Lake, with plenty of parks and marinas it’s the perfect place to relax and take a swim or jet-ski across the lake.
5. Ithaca Fest / Porchfest
There’s plenty of festivals and parties’ year round in Ithaca but these are the two that have the best rep and definitely worth checking out. Ithaca Fest is held in the late spring every year and Porchfest in held in the early weeks of fall. At Ithaca Fest there is a massive parade that goes through downtown Ithaca, tons or craft and food vendors, and live music hourly, the festival start Friday night and carries on until Sunday morning. Porchfest typically is only one day, but it’s definitely a sight. Local bands big and small come together in downtown Ithaca and play music on people’s porches for the entire day.
