Earth is beautiful, but she can be a brat, too. Everyone has experienced at least one horrible storm in their life. Hurricanes, snowstorms, floods, torrential downpours, April showers –these weather patterns can definitely wipe out your power. If your house is anything like mine, where the slightest winds knock out your power, these are the things you want to have on standby for those times.
1. Candles, flashlights, and lanterns.
Light is taken for granted daily, don't be in the dark if you don't have to be!
2. Cards.
Entertainment is hard to come by, especially when you have limited power on your phone, laptop, tablet, and portable batteries.
4. Warm, fuzzy blankets.
In times of colder weather storms, going without heat is BRUTAL. Always keep blankets in easily accessible places.
5. A working cell phone.
If someone needs help, you're snowed in, or need food, it's always good to have a burner phone or use someone else's.
7. Other people.
Nothing is worse than being all alone in a scary storm without a few friends or your significant other.
8. A radio.
Call me old fashioned, but radios are still necessary. They play good tunes and also update you on weather as well.
9. Books.
GiphyEven on limited lighting, books are an escape from your reality.
10. Good snacks.
Stock up on your favorite finger foods and goodies like mini candies or chips. My go-to favorite: Goldfish!
11. An escape route.
If the storm has gone on for about two or three days and you are still without power, it's time to find somewhere else to go. Contact a relative or friend who lives in a place unaffected by the storm and get to safety as soon as possible; there may also be Red Cross pop-up shelters nearby, so be sure to know where the closest one is to you.
