Many of you have probably heard the phrase "F.O.E.," but what does it mean? F.O.E. is an acronym for "Family Over Everything." Family should be valued over everything except for God. My family has taught me so many important values that I will remember and pass on to future generations, and I hope you learn to appreciate them, too. These values include faith, love, trust and honesty and support.
Faith.
Although the phrase is "Family Over Everything," I've learned that God is always my number one. My parents took me to church as a baby, and I still continue to practice my faith as a Catholic. When I became old enough, my family decided that I should be more involved in the church, and I began to do several things, including serving at the altar. Eventually, I joined my local CYO chapter and went to church camps. I met so many new people that shared the same faith values that I do. If you struggle in this area, try talking to your family about going to church and becoming involved. I'm glad my family did for my sake.
Love.
A true family is made of love. A family shares a special kind of love for one another. Unconditional love. They love each other through thick and thin. When you get in trouble for returning home later than curfew, it's not because your guardian(s) hate you; it's their protection and love for you, because they do care about you. Speaking from my own experience, remember that next time you're pulling in the driveway an hour late, and think about how you would feel if you were in their shoes. My family also taught me to not only love your family, but also your friends and neighbors. If you lack love, maybe you should consider how you treat your family.
Trust and honesty.
Trust and honesty are two of the most important things in a family. Having trust means that you are able to rely on each other for all of your needs. If you have no trust, it is a possibility that you will feel empty and unwanted. Honesty is also important. If you lie to each other, how do you know what is true and what to trust? Trust and honesty play off of each other. If you aren't honest, how do you trust? And, if you don't trust, how are you honest?
Support.
From someone who truly believes in "F.O.E.," you need to support each other. When you have support for each other, all of your family values fall in place. You believe in each other and you support each other's dreams. You always have a shoulder to lean on and someone to pick you up when you fall down. Support is the real key to holding your family close to your heart. Always spend time with your family and put them on the top of your list. It should always be "F.O.E."
