Lady Gaga blew us away with her performance of "Til It Happens to You" during the 2016 Academy Awards, and Biden made viewers pull a Leslie Knope by drawing attention to the problem of sexual violence.
"Too many men and women around the country are still victims of sexual abuse," he declared to the nation. He then prompted viewers to support the campaign, #ItsOnUs.
Launched by President Obama and partnered with companies like the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network, as well as Microsoft, Snapchat and Tumblr, #ItsOnUS is a movement to give people a better understanding of what sexual violence is, how to identify it and how to stop it.
"It's on us to stop sexual assault," the campaign's homepage states. The organization has many goals, including the following:
"To RECOGNIZE that non-consensual sex is sexual assault.
To IDENTIFY situations in which sexual assault may occur.
To INTERVENE in situations where consent has not or cannot be given.
To CREATE an environment in which sexual assault is unacceptable and survivors are supported."
The campaign also includes a pledge to be a better bystander, as well as resources to use if you see a questionable or dangerous situation.
"Trust your gut," the site says. "If the situation looks bad, it probably is."
This campaign is comparable to the "Not Anymore" program many Ohio University students took before coming to campus their freshman year. Many resources focus on intoxication making it impossible to give consent, as well as changing campus opinion on rape culture.
