Some people go to college knowing exactly what they want to do in life. Some people go knowing they still need to figure out what is right for them. Then there are the people who go to college thinking they know exactly what they want, later finding themselves more confused than ever because they are in the wrong major.
Many people tell you that it is okay to change your major. They say it is okay to be a little lost. People tell you that you are not alone and that a majority of students change their major multiple times.
The truth is that it is okay to change your major, but people give you so much grief for doing it. They ask you a million questions that all lead to you second-guessing yourself. Then people tell you it’s okay to be lost, but then they pressure you into finding out what you want to do with your life right then and there. The little fact about many people changing their majors is a lie. Yes, people do, but not nearly as many as people say.
In today’s world, there is so much pressure to know what you want to do and become when you are older. Starting in high school they have you take quizzes and tests that try to give you the answers you need, but the truth is it just doesn’t work. Trying to find what is right for you is like finding a needle in a haystack.
Trying to find your way in a world that puts so much pressure on being perfect and having the most money is very hard. You have to sort out what you actually want and what society is telling you to do.
For example, I went to college thinking I wanted to do Pharmacy. I didn’t. I liked the idea of making a lot of money and having a prestigious degree. I was so unhappy and miserable because I was doing something that I did not want to do. Now I am a Communications major and in the field that I am passionate about. It may not be as fancy as being a pharmacist or make as much money as being a pharmacist, but I know that I am happy and in the right place.
No matter what you decide to do, make sure it is for the right reason. If being a doctor is what you are passionate about, be a doctor. If writing for a magazine is what you love, then do that. If teaching kids how to do math is what puts a smile on your face, do that!
The thing you have to remember is that you need to do something you love. Something that you are truly interested in. Have it be something that challenges you and makes your imagination run wild.
I wish you luck in finding what makes you smile. It may take years to find what is right for you, but give it some time. Your life will fall into place right where it is supposed to.
