I don’t usually write about current events because most of the time it's too depressing and I want the people who read my articles to do so with a smile on their face. But this past week, the latest deadly mass shooting in this country has left me in disbelief.
Why? That's what comes to mind as I read tweets and articles about the shooting, and as I watch the news. High schoolers. Most of the victims were high schoolers. Young men and women preparing themselves for all life has to offer; but that was cut short due to the acts of a troubled kid.
I won’t go into whether this was a gun control or mental health issue, but I do believe we need stricter gun laws along with more focus on mental health care. Our President just seems to think our country needs to worry about Russia. Not surprised.
I don’t want to see another alert on my phone stating that there was a mass shooting in this country. It has to stop. Something needs to be done. After Columbine, it was understandable as to why the country was in shambles when it came to gun control because we hadn't seen anything like this at that time. But Sandy Hook is where everyone should have drawn the line. First graders. Five and six year old babies who don’t even know what a gun looks like were brutally slaughtered. Nothing has changed since then.
I want to live in a country where our children matter more than our guns. I want to live in a country where a parent shouldn’t have to be scared to send their child to school everyday. I want to live in a country where a tragedy like this takes place and the first thing we don’t do is follow the “routine.” I want change and you should too.
To all the victims and their families, as well as the wounded, you are in my heart.
