Working retail is an EXPERIENCE. You hear everyone saying it's terrible, and you think, "oh it can't be THAT bad!"
But then it is.
If you have never worked retail, consider yourself blessed. But to give you some insight, let's go through the life of a retail worker:
1. When you're trying to just walk to the break room and get stopped by a customer
"Sure, I can help you find the super specific item you're looking for!"
Inner me: "I JUST WANT TO SIT DOWWWWNNNNNNN!!!!!!"
2. "Can you check in the back if you have more of these?"
Literally, there is nothing back there except stuff that we haven't put out on the floor but let me go "check" to make you feel better!
3. "I found this on the clearance rack but it's not marked can you check if it is?"
There's a 99.9% chance that someone put a regular priced item there. Please don't bother me about it and just assume it's full price, thank you.
4. When someone tries to return 8 shirts, 3 pairs of pants, and a pair of boots all without a receipt and no price tags
Don't expect us to return everything and for the same price you think you got it at. We can only do so much for you. Meet us in the middle. For once. Please.
5. When a customer gets angry with you about store policy
"Being mad at me will literally do nothing for you so I greatly appreciate you ranting to me about it yes PLEASE continue."
6. When a customer comes rolling up to the registers with returns 5 minutes before the store closes
You do realize we are closing, right? I got too much to process already! Take your returns and come back tomorrow morning I beg you.
7. When a customer sifts through your display that you just fixed and messes all of it up
I just spent an hour making this look good but WHATEVER IT'S FINE WE'RE FINE.
8. "Since it doesn't have a price, that means it's free, right? Hahaha!"
Wow I've LITERALLY NEVER HEARD THAT JOKE BEFORE. CAN YOU HEAR IT THROUGH MY FAKE LAUGHTER? HA. HA. HA.
So the next time you want to complain to a retail worker, stop and think, "they're probably going through a lot. I will not take this out on them unless it is directly their fault."
