One of the most pressing issues of this generation is the conflict between the states of Israel and Palestine, with Iran and ISIS thrown into the mix as of recent. I've been listening to people's speaking on the issues, and have heard some wild solutions to the issue. Solutions like people thinking it's okay for one side to erase the other, or just turn the area to glass via nuclear launch. I, however, offer a different and in-depth solution to the problem.
Background: Foundations of the Conflict.
The Israel-Palestine Conflict started far before 1948. In 1943, Jews escaping the Holocaust escaped to the UK and other western countries. From there, they traveled to the Palestinian mandate in the Middle East. The United Kingdom was completely fine with this at first. (See the Balfour Declaration) However, things changed when the inbound Jews began to fight with the resident Palestinian Arabs. Fleeing Jews began to push the majority Palestinians off their land and out of their homes.
The UN Partition of '47 lead to the conflicts that were to come. Several wars, and the lessening of Palestinian land leads to the issues we have today.
Status of Palestine.
Palestine was not recognized as a separate state until 2011. Prior to that, the State of Palestine existed as a limited-recognition sovereign territory under occupation from several powers. First, the West Bank was controlled by Jordan and Gaza by Egypt. After the '67 war, both territories control returned to Israel, and the Sinai Peninsula fell to the Israeli control. Insurgent wars continued well past the Oslo II Accords, which divided the West Bank into zones of control, and continue to this day with recent operations with Gaza.
Solution.
As a supporter of the two-state solution, I would see it the best if the following happened. The A-B-C divisions in the West Bank would be eliminated, and settlements with smaller populations would be evacuated. Palestine and Israel would formally recognize each other. After the first steps concluded, the UN would be called upon to admit Palestine into the UN's ranks.
Once all of those issues are finalized, Jerusalem would become a UN zone, to be controlled by an international force. Israel and Palestine would create identical credentials for visas and passports to limit the flow of arms and criminals into either nation. Palestine would be assisted into democracy by the international community.
Between Gaza and the West Bank, a four-lane highway would be built to link Palestinian territories with a flow of goods. This highway would be guarded by joint Israeli-Palestinian patrols and police forces.
The Capital of Israel would become Tel Aviv, while Palestine's capital would be either Jericho or Ramallah. Israel and Palestine would create mixed security forces to equally patrol the borders between each other and the borders between both lands and the international community.
I know a lot of this is a pipe dream, but it's just one avenue of a solution that I see being viable.
