Why You Shouldn't Be Ashamed Of Your Struggles

Life will make it hard on you sometimes. I'm here to tell you that it's okay if you're struggling.

There are times in our lives where nothing seems to be going right. Where one thing right after another keeps happening, making your luck seemingly worthless against life's plans for you.

You messed up. You lost a friend. You lost the competition. You choked on the game-winning shot. You got your heart broken. You didn't get the job interview. The list goes on and on.

I'm here to tell you I get it. I get the struggles you're going through. I'm right there with you. We can play it off as if everything is fine, that we have a plan for our lives perfectly figured out. It's easy to let the world think our lives are easy instead of trying to explain the feelings and thoughts we have throughout the day, of how everything actually isn't OK.

I'm not here to give you motivational quotes that make you want to punch your computer screen. I'm not here to tell you to get over it and to put a smile on your face. I'm not here to tell you that your problems aren't big enough for you to be as sad as you are. Your struggles are legitimate, your failures in life hurt, and your feelings should not be tossed to the side.

When you take hit after hit, it does take an effect. You can't just brush things off and stand right back up and keep going. Sometimes, the blows hit deeper and leave you sitting on the ground for a little longer than usual.

When your best isn't enough, remember everyone falls down at some point in their lives.

I am here to tell you that it is okay if you take your time getting back up. It's okay to cry and scream and accept the pain. Trying to push your problems, your feelings, or your pain away before dealing with them will cause you more harm than good. You need to take some time to heal. But you can't stay on the ground forever. You have to get back up at some point and try again.

When your best isn't enough, you don't have to put on a fake smile all the time.

The age of social media has tricked us into thinking that we must be having a great life all the time, and sharing it with everyone. I am here to tell you that it is okay if you can't hide the heaviness in your shoulders, or don't feel like smiling the whole day. You should not be ashamed of your struggle, or made to hide it because it makes people feel uncomfortable. You're feeling down, and you're allowed to feel that way.

When your best isn't enough, remember you are enough for you.

It may not seem like it, or you may not believe it just yet, but you are enough. Yes, take your time to process everything happening in your life, eat some ice cream and watch sad movies, but ultimately remember that you still got it going on. You're still a talented, kind-hearted individual who has the potential to change the world. Sure, you may not have gotten the job you wanted, but that just means there's a better fit for you at a different company. Sure, you may have gotten your heart ripped out and stomped on, but that just means that you weren't meant to give your heart to that person in the long run. You are enough. Life is hard sometimes, and it makes you appreciate the good times to no end.

Take it from me; the tough times never last forever. They build character, teach you lessons, and ultimately help you to realize what you really want out of life. Whatever you're going through, know there are people to help you through it, and that you're strong enough to handle it.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
