Is Rape Even A Crime Anymore?

"If a black man committed the same crime..."

Is Rape Even A Crime Anymore?

I’m sure this face has been engraved in people’s minds for the past week or so now - as it should be. However, this face should represent nothing but a rapist. Brock Turner is nothing but a rapist.

There is a lot of talk about how this creature (because let’s face it - that’s what he deserves to be referred to as) should not be getting as much attention as he is. I believe this talk comes solely from the fact that he is a WHITE, all-American swimmer from Stanford. This, however, should have no impact on his sentencing or his image.

Let’s be honest for a second, if this would have been a black male raping a woman of whatever race, the sentencing would have been the typical sentence of 14+ years - no matter if the judge felt “jail would have a major impact” on the individual or not - a black male would sit his butt in jail for a long time - a sad truth.

My second problem in this case is not only the fact that Brock Turner is only sentenced to six months in jail, but the fact that he truly does not show any remorse for his actions and makes himself out to be a victim. He testifies that he has constant thoughts about the day and cannot sleep without thinking about his action - but wait - it’s not due to the fact that he raped a woman but because he can now no longer qualify for the Olympics, cannot get employment, or how he can no longer obtain a Stanford degree - good, why does he feel he deserves any of those rewards? Brock also does not take responsibility for his actions. He blames his actions on the alcohol and the “party culture” and blames his actions on the fact that he is a small town kid from Ohio who never experienced partying and never was told about the negative consequences that alcohol consumption could have.

Brock Turner was not used to the partying culture but was photographed smoking marijuana in several pictures and was also recorded to have exchanged text messages about party drugs such as LSD, acid, and MDMA.

WAIT. “I WAS NEVER TOLD ABOUT THE CONSEQUENCES ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION COULD HAVE”

????????

So, you mean to tell me that your parents, Brock Turner, never once sat you down and told you what could possibly happen once you went away to college or how to be safe? If the answer is actually no then shame on your parents. You mean to tell me that not once throughout high school, not one teacher has talked about alcohol and drug use in life or college and the possibility of rape and other illegal actions to occur? Then, shame on your school district. Regardless if they had a talk with him or not, the rapist definitely knew what he was doing was wrong - why would he have tried to run away when caught if he thought he was committing no crime? No matter what, there is no justification for what this kid did. Many say that this case should not be taken as seriously as people believe due to the fact that the woman, who remains unnamed, was intoxicated as well. I don’t care how many drinks, what kind of drugs this woman did, if she was about it then changed her mind, she was unconscious when found and that alone should be enough reason for him to not do it.

You are spineless and absolutely NOT a victim, Brock Turner, and you deserve to sit in jail for years - not months - and you better be thanking whatever God you believe in that you got a judge that clearly does not understand how to do his job and obviously has no remorse or consideration for the life that you took out of the innocent woman you decided to rape that January night.

It’s sad that this is not the only rape case that has been taken lightly. Another case that has stuck with me for the past few years or so is the case of Josh Duggar. As you may know, Josh Duggar was a part of the 18 Kids and Counting family that was followed by cameramen for the TLC Network for many years. It eventually came to the surface that Josh, the eldest son, had committed the crime of molesting several girls when he was a teenager - about 15 or 16 - two of which were his own sisters. If you are familiar with the family you know they are a super close-knit family that puts all things up to Christ and are very strict with their religious practices. Josh Duggar was sentenced to no time in jail.

Josh Duggar is an accused child molester and has served no time in jail. The officer that he had talked to felt that since he was a teenager at the time that he deserved just a “stern-talking”. A stern talking for a man who molested several young girls - including his own family members.

What are we teaching society? What are we teaching the young boys and girls of America? That if you are a white, privileged male you can rape women because you won’t get a sentence worthy of the crime? That it is the woman’s fault if she is raped because she too was enjoying herself by having drinks? We should be teaching boys how to protect these women who have had one too many, not teach them that she was “asking for it”. Justice was not served for the victim of Brock Turner’s actions but I hope someday karma reaches him and gives him what he deserves.

There is a petition started to get the judge of the Brock Turner case dismissed and you can sign that here: https://www.change.org/p/california-state-house-re...

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
