New Years Resolution, the most infamous promise you never keep. Its that time of year where we are overindulging and over thinking about this year that has passed us by in the blink of an eye. Reevaluating bad choices or habits, and thinking of better ways to keep up with our selves. Its what keeps the gyms busy for the first three months of the new year, maybe less junk food in your pantry.
I'm not sure if not being able to keep a promise to myself is something I should be worried about, or just accept because lets face it, life gets busy. Whether its to better yourself, to be more charitable to others, its a big commitment to take to make a change for entire new year.
The top ten New Years resolutions according to Neilson for 2016 were:
1. Getting in shape.
2. Loose weight.
3. Enjoy life to the fullest.
4. Spend less, save more.
5. Spend more time with family and friends.
6. Get organized.
7. Learn something new/ get a new hobby.
8. travel more.
9. Read More.
10. To not make a resolution at all.
I think we all can agree that there is no better time to recreate, or better yourself, than in the final days of and in a world of "Life Hacks" and "10 ways to make yourself happier articles," the choices are endless, but where did this tradition come from? According to the History Channel, this said tradition spans as far back as the Babylonians, about 4,000 years ago. The new year (celebrated in March, after their crops were planted,) was a 12 religious ceremony. They crowned a king, or rededicated themselves to their Gods by making promises to repay their debts to them. Those promises could be considered for runners to our today, New Year Resolutions. A very similar practice took place in Ancient Rome in January when Julius Cesear messed around with the calendar. January 1 became the start of the New Year, named after Janus, the two-faced God whose spirit would inhabit doorways and arches. January had a very special significance to the Romans. They believed that Janus symbolically looked backwards into the past year, and into the year ahead. The Romans would make promises and sacrifices to this God for a good new year.
So how do you spice up a thousands of years old tradition? what new things could you try to better yourself for the new year? Here are my top ten, new year resolutions to try.
1. Learn a new language.
2. Volunteer for a charity.
3. Meet new people.
4. De-Stress your life.
5. Adopt a pet.
6. Take a break from social media.
7. Try a new haircut, or clothing style.
8. Try something out of your comfort zone.
9. Break a world record!
10. Believe in yourself, become more confident in your decisions.
Ringing in the new year is hard, but setting goals to make a better year than the last is easy as pie! No time better than the present to make youself and your life better.
