I was scrolling through the comments of a YouTube video and I read something along the lines of, "Life is too short to be getting upset about food." Then I read a response to that comment that really made me think. It said, "Life is not short, it is the longest thing you ever experience." Now, I am not sure about you, but this is the first time I have ever heard someone combat the common phrase "life is short." But honestly, it is a fair statement, life is the longest entity you will experience.
Despite your religious backgrounds and what you believe happens after death, life is still long. Sure, it seems to go by quickly. Sure, the days are long but the years are short. But if you think deeply, life is long.
I think we just use phrases such as "life is short" to push us to do things we would not or should not do. For example, if you want to eat ice cream, but you are on a diet, you may think "life is short," and then eat the ice cream. Or you may be contemplating skydiving and your friend tells you, "Life is short," so you go ahead and go skydiving.
I think we use it not only as a sense of encouragement, but also as a sense of comfort. The phrase "life is short" makes us feel as though it is OK to do something risky. Same with the phrase "YOLO," also known as "you only live once."
Maybe we should take a step back and think about what we are actually saying every once in a while. Because, let's face it, is life really short?
