With the NBA draft a couple of weeks away, the Los Angeles Lakers front office have a very important off season ahead of them.
Recently, the Lakers have been actively seeking trades for the current guard, Jordan Clarkson.
Since the Lakers currently hold the number two pick in the draft, they are looking to select one of the many elite guards in this year's draft class.
Clarkson has been productive for LA thus far but his numbers dropped this past season.
After averaging 11.9 points in his rookie year, Clarkson improved his scoring to 15.7 points a game the following year. This season, Clarkson tallied 14.7 points per game. Although the decrease isn't significant, Clarkson was unable to stay consistent throughout the year.
The draft is set for June 22nd and the Lakers are hoping to make a deal before then. If they decide to trade Clarkson it would help the organization clear up cap space.
Last summer, Clarkson signed a four-year, $50 million dollar deal. If the team decides to move him, they will still owe him 37 million over the next three years.
Clarkson's versatility as a combo guard makes him one of the more expendable pieces the Lakers have to offer.
Some of the possible landing spots for the three-year vet could be Portland, Brooklyn and Oklahoma City.
The Blazers currently have one of the best backcourts in the league with Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum. However, they don't have many guards beyond that. Clarkson would help the Blazers by coming off the bench to add scoring depth.
In the last couple seasons, the Nets have made it point to sign youth players to their roster. Their team had very little scoring this year and would benefit from receiving a combo guard like Clarkson.
After losing Kevin Durant to free agency last summer, the Thunder turned to Russell Westbrook to take on most of the scoring responsibilities. Even though Russ had a historic season, the Thunder would often lose when he didn't have a great game. Receiving Clarkson in a trade with LA could take some pressure of Westbrook.
If Clarkson isn't traded, it may be hard for him to find playing time if the Lakers draft a guard like Lonzo Ball, Markelle Fultz or De'Aaron Fox.
